Local Girl's Husband Dies in Viet Nam Action
Sgt. Lawrence A. Franklin, the husband of Tamera J. Franklin of 907 Coolidge Dr., died in Viet Nam 10 Oct (1965) as result of hostile action. He was on search and destroy combat operation when he was hit by small arms sniper fire, Maj. Gen. J. C. Lambert, adjutant, said in a telegram to Mrs. Franklin Monday. Mrs. Franklin has their children, Andre, Bruce and Craig, at home with her. She is the daughter of Mrs. Grace E. Troppman and Walter Troppman, both of Wenatchee. Sgt. Franklin's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Franklin of Auburn, also were notified. (Wenatchee Daily World, Wenatchee 12 Oct 1965)

Sgt. Lawrence A. Franklin Services will be conducted in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1501 Russell St., Friday morning at 11 o'clock. Bishop Garr E. Webb, Elder Russell Port, Elder Edward Anthon and Elder Wayne Lewis will officiate. Concluding services and the interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park with full military honors by the U.S. Army. Arrangements are by the Jones & Jones Funeral Home.

Local Man Dies in Viet Nam John Higman, 20, was killed in action in Viet Nam, according to a telegraph from the Defense Department Thursday to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Higman, 2114 D St. He is the first man from Whatcom County to have died in Viet Nam action. The former Bellingham High School student served 18 months in Korea before being sent to Viet Nam. (The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham WA, Thursday, 18 Nov 1965)

Auburn Man Killed in Viet Nam Mrs. Osvaldo Amodias, 214 A St. SW., received word Friday that her husband, Sgt Amodias, 28 died in action in Viet Nam 17 Nov (1965), The body is to be shipped home and services will be in Tacoma. A native of Cuba, Sgt. Amodias was a naturalized American citizen. He had served eight years with the United States Army and had been assigned to the Airmobile Division, First Cavalry, in the Viet Nam area in mid-August. Sgt. Amodias is survived by his wife and two daughters, Kathleen, 12, and Susan Marine, 10, both students at North Auburn School; his mother, his father and one sister, all in Cuba, and a brother in Florida."(Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma WA, 22 Nov 1965)

Second Lt. Paul H. Eklund, 3527 Shore Ave., died Nov. 19 (1965) in Viet Nam while engaging in search and destroy operations. He was born in Everett 31 Jan 1941, attended the Everett schools and graduated from Linfield College in 1963. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity of which he was president during his senior year. Lt. Eklund leaves his widow, Mrs. Susanne Eklund, 3527 Shore Ave.; one brother, Roger S. Eklund at home and his grandmother, Mrs. Guts Eklund of Virginia MN. Funeral arragnements are under the direct of Challacombe-Fickel and Precht and will be announced. Friends wishing may send flowers or make remembrances in the form of contributions to the Linfield College Scholarship Fund in memory of Lt. Eklund, in care of First Baptist Church. (Everett Herald)

Maple Valley Youth, Injured in Viet Nam Dies A Maple Valley youth, 18-year-old Pfc. Everett Berl Thompson, died 19 Nov (1965) of complications resulting from injuries suffered in the Viet Nam war. Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thompson Jr., of Rt. 1, Maple Valley, died at a hospital in The Philippines, the Defense Department said. The youth who attended Tahoma High School in Maple Valley last year, was recovering from a bullet wound in the head when he contracted meningitis. He was wounded while climbing from an Army helicopter to go into action 31 Oct (1965). Thompson joined the Army and became a paratrooper after leaving the high school last spring. He had been a member of the school dance band and participated in the school play. Survivors include a brother, Dale, who is completing basic training at Ft. Ord CA. Thompson was buried in Manchester KY, where he was born. The family moved to Maple Valley from there three years ago. (Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma WA, 30 Nov 1965)

Viet Action Claims Three Auburn Men
Auburn's toll of deaths during the past week in the Viet Nam war rose to three late yesterday with the announcement that Sgt. Kenneth E. Sargent, 29, and Warrant Officer Billy J. Talley have been killed in action. The following story concerns the death of a third man, Sgt. Osvaldo Armodias, whose death was disclosed to relatives here Friday. Sargent's wife, Viola, and five children, ranging in age for 2 1/2 to 17 live in the Five-Mile Lake Area. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sargent, reside at 2808 S. 28th St. Sargent was a native of Sumner and lived in this area all his life, before entering service. He was shipped to Viet Nam this summer from Ft. Riley KS. (...edited) (Auburn Globe-News 24 Nov 1965)

Sgt. Kenneth E. Sargent 29, of Auburn, who died 20 Nov (1965) in Viet Nam was born in Sumner and lived in Sumner and Auburn all his life. He had been in the Army the past six years and was a member of the Re-organized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Surviving are his wife, Viola M. of the home; a daughter, Nancy, three stepdaughters, Linda, Carolyn and Lola Jenkins, all of the home; a stepson, James Jenkins of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sargent of Federal Way; three brothers, Charles and Roy, both of Federal Way, and Ronald, of Seattle; and a sister, Mrs. Alice Buffalo of Seattle. Sgt. Sargent's Widow given Purple Heart Fort Lewis Quiet ceremonies here Wednesday marked the posthumous award of the Purple Heart to Mrs. Kenneth Sargent of Auburn, wife of Sgt. Sargent killed in Viet Nam on 20 Nov 1965. Sgt. Sargent had been in the Army for 10 years at the time of his death. Maj. Gen. A. S. Collins Jr., commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Lewis, escorted Mrs. Sargent and her mother, Mrs. H. Bedell, past an honor guard standing at "present arms" in front of the headquarters flag pole. Appropriate music by the 4th Infantry Division Band, the reading of the citation by Lt. Col. Herbert Robinson, Fort Lewis Adjutant General, preceded the presentation of the medal. Present for the ceremony were Mrs. Sargent's children, Linda, 18; Carlen, 15; James 13; Christy, 11; and Nancy, "almost3." Also attending was the pastor of Mrs. Sargent's church, the Rev.
