| Good News, Then Bad For Sergeant's Wife Mrs. Sandra Morales, of 606 S. 98th St. had a few bright hours Saturday before the doorbell rang. She had been informed earlier last week that her husband, Sgt. Leslie L. Morales, 26, had been seriously wounded by a booby-trap in Viet Nam. But first on Saturday came a government telegram telling her that Morales was improving. And then a letter arrived from a nurse, saying that her husband was doing well, talking about her and the baby, and looking forward to coming home. "A couple of hours later an officer came to the door," Mrs. Morales said Monday. "He told me my husband was dead." In the last letter she received from her husband, he told of being placed in charge of a squad of "real nice guys" and reported that they were about to leave on patrol. "He said he was going out and get all the Viet Cong he could," she said. Mrs. Morales, the former Sandra Lipscomb, met and married Morales 2 1/2 years ago when he was stationed at Fort Lewis with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry. Last year, Morales was sent to Alaska, and then to Hawaii for jungle training before going to Viet Nam. He had been in Viet Nam exactly two months when he was wounded. The Morales have a son, Leslie Morales Jr., 10 months old. Sgt. Morales was a native of Puerto Rico and had been in the Army seven years. Besides his wife and son, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eliseo Morales, of Ponce, Puerto Rico; four brothers; and three sisters. One of his brothers, Spec. 4 Barney Morales, will accompany his body on the long journey from Viet Nam to Puerto Rico, where services and burial will be held. Mrs. Morales said she will go to Puerto Rico for the services. Her mother, Mrs. Doris Lipscomb, is en route from Germany, where her husband is stationed with the Army, to stay with her daughter in the interim. (Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma WA, 4 Jul 1966)

(MIA records extracted from P.O.W. Network). Terry Arden Dennison was born 20 Jan 1934. He was the pilot of a Vought F8 "Crusader", a single person fighter and bomber. On 19 Jul 1966 he was part of a strike force that attacked the Co Trai Bridge. His aircraft was struck by a missle and was immediately enveloped in flames. No chute was observed but the emergency homing signal was activated for just a few seconds after the crash. Radio Hanoi later broadcasted that a Vietnamese missile unit shot down a U.S. Aircraft on the outskirts of Hanoi and that the pilot was captured. After the war Vietnamese authorities informed American officials that Lt. Dennison died on 21 Jul 66. He was one of more that 20 Americans who died in captivity in Hanoi and were buried at Van Dien Cemetery. (southern suburbs Hanoi) These remains were re-interred in Ba Huyen Cemetery in 1972 and repatriated on 6 Mar 1974. (most of this extraction is a report by Bob Destatte)

Bremerton Marine, 18, Killed in Viet Fighting
Marine Pfc. Daniel William Harmon, 18-year-old son of Mrs. Howard Ragsdale, 1141 Morgan Road, was killed by enemy action in Viet Nam Sunday.
Harmon is believed to be the first Kitsap County serviceman to die in battle in Viet Nam.
The young man was a member of India Company of the 5th Marine Regiment which was ambushed by communist soldiers during Operation Hastings near the North Viet Nam border.
The ambush, described as “darn near a massacre,” was reported in Monday’s edition of The Sun.
“I had a funny feeling when I read that story,” Mrs. Ragsdale said as she and the boy’s step-father Wednesday afternoon re-read the story.
News of her son’s death was delivered in person to Mrs. Ragsdale by Lt. Col. Robert M. Krippner, commanding officer of Bremerton Marine Barracks, Tuesday afternoon.
Information from the Marine Corps indicate that Harmon died of multiple shrapnel wounds from an enemy “explosive device” while in action in Quang Tri Province of Viet Nam.
The young man enlisted in the Marine Corps in Bremerton in April, 1965, after attending schools here and Prosser. He received his recruit training at San Diego and had been stationed in Okinawa until his 18th birthday when he was sent to Viet Nam.
He was born 17 Apr 1948, in Chehalis. Though moving around a lot, he had spent a larger part of his life in Prosser and here.

County GI Loses Life in Viet Nam Arthur H. Dyvig Jr. died Monday in Viet Nam of a gunshot wound suffered in combat. Death of the 18-year-old Ridgefield area soldier was reported to his father in a War Department telegram delivered personally Wednesday by a representative of the U. S. Army. Pfc. Dyvig thus becomes the second Clark County man reported killed in the Viet Nam war. Roy F. Harbison of Vancouver was killed in March. The youth's father, Arthur H. Dyvig Sr., lives in a modest frame house at Rt. 1, Box 570, Ridgefield. Thursday he and two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Randolph of Tillamook Or and Miss Carolyn Dyvig of Ridgefield, traced Pfc. Dyvig's life and the events leading up to his death in the jungles of Viet Nam. Pfc. Dyvig was born and grew up in the little Clark County community known as Duluth where the elder Mr. Dyvig still lives. He attended Ridgefield High School but quit school to join the Army "about 22 months ago."
Last August he was sent over seas to Korea. He wanted to serve in Viet Nam and put in for a transfer to that battle area. His transfer was granted last February. "He was going to come home in March," the youth's father said. Funeral arrangements of Pfc. Dyvig are still undetermined, the family said, pending further notification from the Army. Pfc. Dyvig is survived by one other sister, Mrs. Betty Randolph of Tillamook Or, and a brother, Berkeley Dyvig of San Francisco. (Columbian, Vancouver WA, 29 Jul 1966)
