FULL MILITARY FUNERAL HONORS SGT. JUAN OZUNA Requiem Mass for Sgt. Juan S. Ozuna, 21, who died 15 Dec (1967) in Vietnam of wounds he had received earlier in combat, were conducted Tuesday morning at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church by Father F. E. O'Hearn. Sgt. Ozuna was born 16 Jun 1946, at Mabton and was a 1966 graduate of Wapato High School. He was a member of the Army's First Air Cavalry. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas Ozuna; five brothers, Lucas, Jr., Jesse, Bernard, Joe, and David; two sisters, Mary and Dianna, all of Wapato; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pascual Sanchez, Wapato, and Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Ozuna, Texas. Burial with full military honors, was held in the Reservation Community Memorial Park, Sourwine-Merritt Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. A Vigil service was held for Ozuna at 7:30 p.m. Christmas day at the funeral home. As a member of the 1st Air Cavalry, Sgt. Ozuna was wounded by an enemy grenade while patroling with his unit along the Demiliarized Zone between North and South Vietnam. He was hospitalized for two months and was released although doctors were not able to remove a piece of metal from his back. The wound, for which he had received the Purple Heart, reopened after he had returned to his patrol duty and he died following his return to the hospital. Among his possessions was found a poem. Ozuna had written in anticipation of his homecoming and is as follows: | Away From Home Far away in this battered land, Torn apart by unfriendly hand, This is a land that knows no peace, It's a place in the South East. Orders they gave me that I must go, To do my part for a year or so. I'll do my job that best I can to help these people win their land. All that I love I left behind, my wonderful family, oh so divine. The last few moments we spent alone, we were all planning when I'll be home. I am here in this land of Viet Nam, to do all I can to keep the calm. So far from home, it's a lonely place, millions of people, not a familiar face This year will pass, the counting will cease, I pray that this land will be at peace, I've done my share, I'm proud to say. Now it's back home to the U.S.A. | Wapato Independent, Wapato WA, Thursday, 28 Dec 1967
