Remembering: Roderick Dane MC MURRY I have a little info on Roderick Dane McMurry.... He was my 1st cousin. His dad and my mom were brother and sister... He was born 9/27/1946 and Died 6/1/1967...This was a really sad story for my McMurry line as my grandad was an only child and he had one son and 2 daughters....Rod, of course, being from the son....My Uncle, Rod's father, had some real tragdies befall his family. He had 1 daughter and 3 sons to carry on the family name but this was not to be...The youngest son, Jerome Scott McMurry, b 1948 and d 1951 burned up in a barn fire.... The oldest son, (second child) graduated from Mossyrock High School and went with friends to the beach on their motorcycles. Gregory Kim McMurry never made it home as he accidently drove his motorcycle into the path of an oncoming truck. He was trying to fix something that was loose or falling off of the bike....And that left, Roderick Dane McMurry. He didn't graduate from High School. He married and had a child (a girl). He was drafted into the Marines. I dont know what happened with the "sole surviving son thing" but there are no more McMurry's from this line to carry on the name.... I found the newspaper article my mom cut out of the paper at the time or else it was from my grammas stuff....It shows 6 guys from Lewis County (who died in 1967) Sincerely Tami (DeRossett) Moorcroft (Email received 1 Jan 2003)

Father Receives Son's Medals A Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart earned in Vietnam by Sgt. Hubert C. Van Poll were presented to his father Here (Fort Lewis) Thursday. Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Cornelius C. Van Poll, of Seattle, accepted the medals on behalf of his son who died from wounds received in action last 15 Jun (1967) which brought him the nation's second highest award for bravery. The medals were the most impressive array of decorations presented here for Vietnam heroism to any individual since the conflict began. Brig. Gen. Robert L. Ashworth, deputy U.S. Army Training Center commander, made the presentation to Van Poll. Sgt. Van Poll was a platoon leader in the 5th Special Forces Group when he earned the Distinguished Service Cross at the cost of his life. His company was moving to relieve a trapped South Vietnamese unit when they were raked by a sudden outburst of machine-gun fire. When another U.S. soldier was hit, the sergeant crawled toward him, firing steadily. He picked up the wounded man and ran through intense fire to his own lines. He was knocked down by a grenade explosion but struggled to his feet and carried the man to safety. As he was treating his comrade's wounds, he was mortally wounded himself. Van Poll was awarded the Silver Star for a similar action 1 May (1967) in which he charged enemy gunners and ignored withering enemy fire to rescue a wounded American adviser. His Bronze Star citation hailed the sergeant's "untiring efforts and professional ability that consistently achieved outstanding results" during six months in service with Special Forces in Vietnam. (Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma WA, 15 Dec 1967)

Kin To Get Hero Medals Cottage Grove The mother of an Army sergeant killed in Vietnam will receive Saturday several heroism medals awarded her son. The medals will be presented in special ceremonies at Ft. Lewis WA., to Gertrude Ladd, mother of S. Sgt. Hubert Van Poll of Cottage Grove. The awards to be presented include the Distinguished Service Cross second only to the Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with second oak leaf cluster, and Purple Heart. Van Poll, 30, was a platoon leader in the Army's special forces. On the day he was killed, 15 Jun 1967, Van Poll rescued a wounded comrade under heavy fire, was knocked down by a grenade explosion but still got the man to safety then was mortally wounded while treating the man's wounded. The Silver Star will be presented for similar action on 1 May 1967, when Van Poll charged enemy gunners and ignored heavy fire to rescue another wounded American. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 24 Feb 1968)

Mother Accepts Medals Awarded Posthumously Fort Lewis WA In ceremonies at Ft. Lewis Saturday, Mrs. James H. Ladd of Cottage Grove,Ore., accepted the Distinguished Service Cross and other medals awarded posthumously to her son for heroism in Vietnam. The soldier, Staff Sgt. Hubert Van Poll, braved enemy fire to save a wounded comrade. Brig. Gen. Robert L.Ashworth acting commander of Ft. Lewis and the U.S.Army training center here, presented Mrs. Ladd the DSC Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. The sergeant's father, retired Navy CPO Cornelius C. Van Poll of Seattle, was presented a duplicate set of medals previously. (The Oregonia, Portland OR, 25 Feb 1968)

General Orders Number 3867

AWARD OF THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS

Date of Action: 15 June 1967
Theater: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Staff Sergeant Van Poll distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 June 1967 while serving as Special Forces platoon leader of a Mike Force Company which was moving to relieve a beleaguered Vietnamese unit near Dak To. As Sergeant Van Poll's company moved along a heavily wooded trail, it received a sudden outburst of intense Viet Cong machine gun fire from concealed, fortified positions. When another American, who was leading a small element in counterattack, was hit, Sergeant Van Poll left his cover and, firing steadily, crawled toward the wounded man. Despite intense fire raking the ground all around him, he reached his comrade and administered first aid. He then picked up the wounded man and ran towards his own lines through a tremendous outburst of fire. Sergeant Van Poll was knocked to the ground by a grenade explosion, but struggled to his feet and reached a covered position. The insurgents' attack intensified and as Sergeant Van Poll was treating his comrade's wounds, he was mortally wounded himself, Staff Sergeant Van Poll's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty, at the cost of his life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Authority: By direction of the President, Under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 25 July 1963 and Department of the Army message 782774, dated 19 September 1966.

Slain Ex-Tacoma GI Awarded Silver Star Noel T. West, a former resident of Tacoma who was killed in action in Vietnam last June has been posthumously awarded the Silver Star, headquarters of the 9th Inf Div in San Francisco reported Saturday. West served with the 7th Battalion, 47th Inf of the 9th Div. Before he entered the Army, he was employed as a funeral director by the Mountain View Funeral Home. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. James West, former Tacoma residents, now live in Wendell ID. A brother, Kurt, lives in Tacoma. The official document announcing the posthumous award included the following statement:
"Spec. 4 Noel T. West distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions 19 Jun 1967, while serving as a medical corpsman with his unit on a search-and-destroy mission near the village of Can Giouc. Vietnam. "As the allied force was traversing a muddy rice paddy, they were met by a hail of automatic and semi-automatic fire from a well-entrenched Viet Cong force concealed in a clump of trees. Immediately upon receiving fire, West, in complete disregard for his own safety, began to treat the wounded. As bullets pounded the ground and filled the air around him, West dashed from casualty to casualty, rendering aid that in several cases proved to be of a life-saving nature. Hostile machine gun fire sprayed the rice paddy, and West, while aiding yet another wounded soldier was hit and mortally wounded. West gave his life in order that others might live; he was an inspiration to the men around him. West's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself, the 8th Infantry Div., and the United States Army." A Remembrance for an Army Buddy   Greetings. As info, I am in the process of creating a Memorial (with photos and newsclippings) to my ole Army Buddy, Forrest Ramos, on my Web Site at www.9thinfantrydivision.com this will be accomplished over the next several weeks with the assistance of a nephew to Forrest, Vincent Ramos. At any rate, once it's completed I am wondering if you would be interested in posting some of the material on your Web Site? By the way, I was on the battlefield the day Forrest lost his life; it was during a huge battle on June 19, 1967. I saw Forrest and several other wounded soldiers hobble onto a helicopter for evacuation to a military hospital, but the chopper was promptly shot down from a height of approximately 150-200ft. There were no survivors. . . Best Regards, Bill Reynolds Valencia, California (an email received 3 Jan 2005)
