In Remembrance of Joe Whitby class of 1962 Joe graduated in the class of 1962. I went through school with Joe. We were sort of tossed together because of the closeness in the spelling of our last names. Joe was a wonderful individual. In all the years we spent in school together, I can't honestly remember one that Joe didn't have a smile on his face, or have a kind word for everyone. He was a special person. He was genuine, kind, courteous, and thoughtful, as well as a rather quiet young man. All the things one wants in a son growing up. It is truly unfortunate that Joe died so young. He is still missed by all those that new him and appreciated that infectious, radiant smile. Dave Whitmire, Pasco High School Class of 1962, 28 Feb 1962

Fife Marine Dies in Action Lance Cpl. Juan V. Mina Jr., son of a prominent North Puyallup and Auburn strawberry and vegetable grower, Juan V. Mina Sr., has been listed by the Defense Department as killed in action in Vietnam. The Marine was one of two Washington men whose deaths in action were announced Wednesday. The other was Army Pfc. Marine died in Manila of War Wounds Services will be announced by Bonney-Watson Funeral Home Seattle for Marine Lance Cpl. Juan V. Mina Jr., 23, member of a Puyallup Valley farm family who died Friday in Philippines after surgery for combat injuries suffered in Vietnam. The services will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Seattle. Telegrams from the Defense Department told of the action in which Cpl. Mina was wounded 8 Mar (1967) and of his being flown to Manila for emergency surgery. Just before midnight last Friday, the surgeon there telephoned the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Juan V. Mina Sr. of North Puyallup, that efforts to save the Marine's life had failed. Cpl. Mina was born in Milton and started school there, later transferring to Sumner schools. After attending a Catholic school in Seattle for a time, he returned to Sumner to attend high school. Before joining the Marine Corps, he had been employed in Seattle and Alaska. Two years ago he married the former Miss Carmen Alijo, a Puyallup High School graduate with whom he was active in the Philipino-American Youth Club. Mina was a former treasurer of the club. The couple were members of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Fife. Mrs. Mina lives at 5920 8th St. NE., Fife Heights. Cpl. Mina left last August for a year's duty in Vietnam. He was on patrol duty when hit by enemy fire, the family learned. In addition to his father and wife, Cpl. Mina's survivors include his stepmother, Mrs. Cleotilde U. Mina; a sister, Mrs. Judy Mina Imori, of Seattle; an uncle, Dr. Gary Dunham, of the University of Washington faculty; a grandfather, Lemuel Dunham, of Tacoma, Mrs. Maria Mina, who arrived Thursday from the Philippine Islands, Relatives are gathering from distant states. A cousin stationed with the Army at Ft. Ord CA, will bring the body from Oakland CA, the parents said. (Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma WA, 24 Mar 1967)
