KEITH ATCHLEY IS FIRST WOODLAND WAR FATALITY
Sp 4 Keith N. Atchley has become Woodland's first Vietnam war fatality. Word of his death was received Friday morning by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester T. Atchley of 934 Butte Hill Road.
First notification was delivered in person by a Sgt. Moffitt from Fort Lewis at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Then Saturday morning the Atchleys received the official telegram which contained everything known to date about the circumstances of his death:
" The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deep regret that your son Sp-4 Keith N. Atchley died in VietNam the 11th of April, 1968 as a result of a gunshot wound received while on a combat operation when engaged with a hostile force in a firefight.
"Please accept my deepest sympathy. this confirms personal notification made by representatives of the Secretary of the Army, Kenneth G. Wickham, Major General, U.S.A.F., the adjutant general."
Sp-4 Atchley was a machine gunner assigned to Co. B, 196th Light Infantry Brigade in the northwestern corner of Vietnam near the Laotian border and within five miles of the DMZ.
When the Woodland soldier arrived in Vietnam 8 Aug 1967, he had deep convictions and a sense of responsibility regarding his role in the war, according to his parents.
"He really felt that if we didn't fight them there, we would fight them here," recalls Mrs. Atchley. "But lately he had become discouraged when the bombing was reduced." Every time the bombing stopped, they were subjected to surprise attacks, she said. "It's like hell on earth being slaughtered," he wrote recently.
Two days before his death, young Atchley, on 9 Apr (1968) wrote his parents this brief letter: "I have not been too good lately. Today I can hear the sounds of the gun ships shooting rockets and stuff like that (gunships are only major protection during bombing halts.)
"It is not a good sound at all, but at times you can't help liking that sound. For when you're in a fight, these gun ships come in real good. It has been up to 99-110 degrees the last two weeks."
Prior to notification of his death, his last letter observed: "In 115 days I'll be out of this hell hole," In others he had complained of being "held back" and of a lack of aggressiveness by American forces recently.
"He wanted peace more than anything in the world, and that's what he fought earnestly for," said Mrs. Atchley.
Military funeral services for Sp-4 Atchley will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Woodland upon arrival of his body at Woodland Funeral Home. According to a Monday telegram, "the body will be shipped at earliest available air transportation, and will be accompanied to Woodland by a military escort.
Besides his parents, Sp-4 Atchley is survived by three brothers, Frank Atchley, Riverside CA; Lester Atchley, Longview; and Donald Atchley, Carrols; and by a grandmother, Mrs. Christy Stanley of Longview.
Upon his graduation from Woodland High School in 1966, young Atchley went to work at the Weyerhaeuser Co. mill in Longview where he worked until April, 1967. He was inducted into the Army 15 Apr (1967) Lewis River News, Woodland, Thursday, 18 Apr 1968)

336th Assualt Helicopter Co...Unit Report
On 26 Mar 1968, the Warriors went on a "snake hunt" at Rach Gia. Shortly before dark Cpt. Hoover put in 40 troops to look for an arms cache. Two ship loads of arms and ammunition were found and two Warriors went in to get it. The first helocopter received fire as they lifted off with their load of explosives. Two men were hit by bullets neither seriously injured. The second aircraft piloted by WO Don Klotz and WO Robert Offutt went into the LZ to pick up the remainder of the cache. Heavy fire was received and SP5 Lawrence Fullaway, the ship's gunner, was seriously wounded in the back. WO Klotz was also hit by shrapnel in the neck and leg. The aircraft made it back to the staging area, where maintenance quickly determined that it was was unflyable. The ship had a total of 27 bullet holes in it!
Bruce Swander, Vietnam Researcher, reports that Lawrence Fullaway was taken to a field hospital and that some of the men he served with did not know he died from his wounds.
Also on the Unit Report was a promotion list and SP5 Lawrence Fullaway was listed as receiving a promotion during the month of March. Unit notes and researcher comments

Remembrance for Paul Larson I went to Everett High School with Paul. He was quiet and shy with a good sense of humor. He sat behind me in one of my classes and in my yearbook wrote (from my memory) "I wouldn't have made it without you, thanks for letting me look over your shoulder." I was appalled when I saw it because I never would let anyone look over my shoulder... but now as I think of it... perhaps I did because Paul was so nice.
