Remembering - Dave Daily I knew David from grade school on. He and his twin brother Mike were pretty crazy -- had the reputation of being really tough kids and they were. I think Dave went to Stadium High School in Tacoma. He and I were the same age so he would have graduated in 1966. Problem is...I just don't remember that much about him in HS so I could be wrong. Dave was tough but he had a big heart and he was very loyal to his friends. He was pretty quiet and didn't like to socialize a whole lot. But, if you were his friend, he would do anything for you. He was raised by his mother -- not sure what happened with his father. (Paul Henderson, email questions, 3 Oct 2003)

Bremerton Man Dies of Wounds
Pfc. Stephan P. Barker, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Barker, 4016 Mountain View Drive, has died of wounds sustained in Vietnam action, his parents have been told by Marine Corps representatives.
“He was proud of the Corps and so strongly believed in what we are doing in Vietnams. We’re very proud of him,” his grieving mother said.
The young man died Monday aboard the hospital ship USS Sanctuary. He was taken there after sustaining fragmentation wounds from and enemy explosive device while in a defensive position in the vicinity of Thua Thein, the Marine Corps said.
He was a member of the Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Division.
“Ours is a Marine Corps family and Steve was very proud to be a Marine,” Mrs. Barker said, explaining that her husband’s brothers were Marines.
They all saw action overseas, three in World War II and one in Korea. Two, Ernest Barker of Keyport and William Barker of Santa Ana CA, were career men and have retired. James and his brother, Fred Barker, Poulsbo, were in the Corps during World War II.
“We hope that the cause in Vietnam is worthwhile… the price is so great,” said one of Steve Barker’s aunts yesterday as the family gathered at Barker’s Bremerton Gardens residence.
The young man was born 23 Sep 1947, at Portland OR, and was reared in Tacoma where he graduated from Stewart Junior High School and began high school at Lincoln.
The family moved to Bremerton about 3 1/2 years ago and he attended East High School. He was an expert swimmer and used to swim across Port Washington Narrows just about every day. “I used to worry about him so much,” his mother said.
“And he loved fishing, all kinds of fishing,” she added.
Before joining the Marine Corps last May, he worked for a time handling ammunition at Bangor Naval Ammunition Depot.
He had been in Vietnam since early September.
Surviving, in addition to his parents and uncles, are a brother, Army Pvt. James C. Barker, 25, Fort Lewis; two sisters, Mrs. Larry (Merrily) Rutt, San Diego CA, and Beth Ann Barker, 11, a 6th grade pupil at Manette School; and two aunts, Mrs. Maybelle Hall of Seattle, and Mrs. Ruth Wyatt of Vashon, Vashon Island.
Funeral services will be held at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Chapel under the direction of Lewis Chapel. The time of services still is to be set. (Bremerton Sun, Bremerton WA, Jan 1968)

Prepared to Give Life"
Letter From Marine Recalled At School After Death Report

"I can think of no thought which makes me prouder that that I am an American citizen fighting for God, Corps and Country. The feeling that I am fighting for the freedom of fellowmen is equally strong.
"For these I am prepared to give my life if need be... We will not run from the fight we face."
Those words were written in November by Marine Lance Cpl. Steven L. Hellwig, 19, in an open letter to Shorecrest High School, from which he graduated in 1966.
His letter was recalled poignantly after his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hellwig, 1809 N. E. 171st, were notified that he was killed in action at the Khe Sanh, Vietnam, last Sunday.
Young Hellwig had written the letter after reading of the violence at the anti-war demonstration at the Pentagon.
"To us here," Hellwig wrote, 'these protesters and 'draft card burners' are cowards with no national pride. They hide their lack of courage behind the words, 'The war is wrong.'
"They don't deserve the right to be called an American. Does it not say in the laws governing our country open acts against our country are 'treason'?
"We here are just as afraid to die as they are -- maybe more since we are here. But do you hear us crying? No! We have confidence enough to fight for what we think is right." (Seattle Times, Seattle WA, 26 Jan 1968)
