Jeffery Evan FESER
(a Remembrances for Jeff by his brother John Feser)
Jeff was born and raised in Seattle, WA. Our family was quite active in school activities, and we took vacation trips in the summer usually camping and visiting all the national parks in the western US. Our Dad (Bob), Mom (Betty) Jeff and I (John) comprised the Feser family. Looking back on it, I guess that we were the model family for Seattle. We had a great time growing up in Seattle.

In 1952 our family moved from a central Seattle apartment to our first and only family home in West Seattle. Our house was finished in phases over a couple of years, so Jeff and I got a lot of "dirt time" building forts in the back yard. Jeff attended Holy Rosary grade school that is about a mile from the house. After grade school he went to and graduated from O'Dea High School in Seattle. It was soon after graduation from O'Dea that he decided to enlist in the Marine Corp. At the time there was a wait list so he spent about 6 months working at a freight depot at the port of Seattle. It was during this time that he purchased his pride and joy, a 1967 MGB. It was a black beauty with wire wheels.

It was during this time that he met his first true love, Claudia. I know that they had a great time together and were planning for their future together after his tour.

After enlisting, Jeff went for basic and advanced training in CA. He graduated high in his class and was selected to attend language school. After language school Jeff went to Vietnam as a Lance Corporal. He was assigned to a line Marine Infantry unit on the DMZ. (Note: I do not remember the unit, but will take a look old letters and will update bio with that information.)

While in Vietnam he spent most of the time on operational patrols on the DMZ. (Note: We have all of his old letters describing his field activities so I will post a few in the coming weeks). In one of his last letters he told us that he had put in for a transfer to become a member of a Marine/Vietnamese team he called CAP (Combined Action Platoon). He felt that he could make more use of his newly acquired language skills and help protect the village people from Viet Cong and the NVA moving into the area.

Jeff was in country about six months when he was killed by machine gun fire while on mission in force to a NVA stronghold on the DMZ. He truly felt that the cause of the war was just and that he was doing the right thing for the people of Viet Nam.

He was a good Marine and a great brother. He is buried at the Washelli Cemetery in Seattle in the Pearl Harbor section.

(biography received from John Feser Feb 2003)

(Jeff Feser's last letter home to his brother John,)

June 1, 1968

Dear John,

We’re still waiting at Hill 558 to be helolifted to our objective. We were scheduled out for today, but the fuel depot at Cau Li blew last night so the choppers must go to Plu Bai to get refueled.

I can’t tell you much about the operation because I don’t know very much myself. Alls we do know for sure is that we’re going to have one hell of a firefight. I doubt whether many of us get out alive. We’re going to a NVA stronghold and going to kick some ass. They tell us that there are three regiments in the area and 2000 gooks at our final objective. Bravo Co. tried to secure the LZ yesterday and got the shit kicked out of them and had to be taken out with 11 KIA and 32 WIA. 2/3 which is our blocking force is completely surrounded so 2/4 is coming in from another direction or else into our LZ after we start sweeping.

The area is real heavy tropical forests and rolling hills of about 5 to 6 hundred meters high. I guess I’ll carry about 800 rounds just in case and leave most of my chow behind.

Most of us are really scared. Everybody knows what we’re going to hit so we all know what to expect. I guess its going to be just like trying to take 881 all over again. I finally had a change to go swimming again after 45 days so I’m clean one more, at least for a day.

I went to mass and confession yesterday and to mass again today so I’m pretty well squared away up above too.

Well I guess I’d better sign off for now, just remember that being a good soldier is just like being a Marine, It doesn’t take a man, just guts.

Jeff
