Picture and Remembrance for Chip, from his Cousin, Van Herndon
...Attached please find a scanned photo of my cousin W. Cole Herndon, we knew him as Chip.
Remembrance: I remember my cousin “Chip” as a kind, and very proper young man. My father was his uncle, and I did not know him very well. I was only 13 when he was killed, but remember the service all too well. I have a football at home that he gave me (or it was given to me later) that he got for being a ball boy in a 49ers exposition football game in Seattle. I think of him often, and wished I had known him better.
Correction: His sisters name is Molly, not Milly.
Van Herndon (email received 2 Mar 2009)

Remembrance for Cole Herndon, Class mate
Cole was captain of the football team ('62). He was the fullback and linebacker for the defense.. a very good player. He was also a good student and very popular.
During the years I knew him I cannot think of a single instance where he did or said anything which would cause embarassment to his family. He was very mature for his age.
Cole was a platoon leader at the time of his death. His radio operator was a guy named John Bruce. John graduated from Ballard in '65 and just happened to be the fullback on the '64 team.
John held Cole as he died that day.
Years later John named his first born, Cole.
