Incident description by Vietnam Researcher, Bruce Swander
8/20/69
WALDOWSKI, James Richard, WO1 (Warrant Officer)
AH-1G helicopter, #68-15032
Helicopter training at Ft Wolters and Ft Hunter. Received his 'Wings' on 3/11/69.
Arrived in Vietnam 5/12/69.
At 6PM, Waldowski and WO Martin Tabor went standby for aviation support. At 8:30PM, Dong Tam (Mekong Delta) started to receive mortar rounds and word came in that an Infantry Unit (6/31st) was in contact with the enemy. Scrambling to the action, they supported the ground troops with three mini-gun attacks. Notified that additional enemy was fleeing, they flew down to make another run - but their guns had become inoperative. Taber then decided to use his rockets. He quickly swooped down, fired four pairs of rockets - tucked the nose down in an effort to put the last pair of rockets on target - and transmitted back "breaking right". Eyewitnesses saw the AH-1G crash, explode on impact, killing both pilots immediately.(Bruce Swander, Email received 4 Feb 2004)
