To Marry Mr. and Mrs. Harry F. Higgins have announced the engagement of their daughter Gail to Lieutenant Daniel B. Cheney, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Cheney, 1554 King Mountain Ave. The announcement was made at J Bar H Ranch, Moses Lake. Miss Higgins attended Big Bend Community College and is now at Western Washington State College. Lt. Cheney attended Clark Jr. College, Vancouver WA and is now stationed at Bien Hoa, Vietnam (The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham WA, Monday, 6 January 1969)

Local Helicopter Pilot Shot Down Lieutenant Daniel B. Cheney, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Cheney, 1554 King Mountain Ave., was killed in Vietnam Monday when his single placement combat helicopter was shot down by enemy fire.
    Cheney had completed an army flight training school course and left for Vietnam 19 Dec (1968) where he was stationed at Bien Hoa. He is the 34th man from this area to die in Vietnam.
    He attended Clark Junior College in Vancouver WA and was an Army Officer Candidate School graduate before receiving flight training.
    Flying a Cobra Helicopter, a one-man fighter, he was giving direct support to ground troops when shot down.
    His engagement to Miss Gail Higgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry F. Higgins of Moses Lake, was announced only last Monday, the day he was killed. He attends Western Washington State College.
    Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Rae Cheney, head teller at a local bank; his father, who works with the County Agricultural Department, and two sisters. (The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham WA, Wednesday, 8 Jan 1969)

Camas Soldier killed during Vietnam action. Word has been received of the death in combat action of Cpl. Gerald Olmsted, brother of Mrs. Elra Starks, 231 NE 7th Camas. Olmstead died of wounds sustained on a reconnaissance mission with the 196th Inf. Div. US Army in South Vietnam, on 10 Jan 1969. The Corporal entered the service in August, 1967 and had been in Vietnam since April, 1968. Funeral Arrangements are pending with Stoller Memorial Chapel. (Post-Record, Camas and Washougal WA )

Clark GI is victim of tiger Victim not of the Viet Cong but of a tiger, Pfc. Gerald R. Olmsted, 21, of Camas, has become one of the most unusual fatalities in the war in Vietnam, a Defense Department announcement today disclosed. The Camas youth was on a night reconnaissance patrol at the time. Army officials said the soldier died of injuries suffered during the tiger attack last Friday morning. He was serving with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. Olmsted, whose parents are deceased, listed his next of kin as Mrs. Blanche M. Starks, 231 N. E. Seventh Ave., Camas. He is also survived by seven others sisters and a brother. Mrs. Starks said her brother served in the Job Corps at Moses Lake before entering the Army in August, 1966. He went overseas last spring. Olmstead was the 41st young man with Clark County ties to die in Vietnam. Funeral services will be announced later from Stoller Memorial Chapel in Camas when the body is returned from Vietnam. (The Columbian, Vancouver WA, 14 Jan 1969)

Full Honors for CPL. G. Olmstead. Burial in Camas Cemetery Saturday afternoon Jan 18, with full military honors was accorded Cpl. Gerald Ray Olmstead, 21 year old Camas serviceman who met death 10 Jan (1969) in Vietnam. A defense department announcement indicated death was due to an attack by a tiger while the soldier was on patrol. An honor guard firing squad, and bugler were sent from Fort Lewis, Wash., to participate in the service, conducted by the Rev. William E. Burrese, Sr., at Stoller Memorial Chapel. Corporal Olmstead had lived in Camas 2 one half years coming here from Montana where he was born 6 Aug 1947. Survivors are three brothers, Thomas of Camas, Reuben of Oshkosh, Wis., and Edward C. of Wisconsin; eight sisters, Mrs. Mary Repiniki of Oshkosh, Wis., Mrs. Margaret L. Ottum of Shelby, Mont., Mrs. Joy R. Paradis of White Fish, Mont., Miss Esther Olmstead of Gladstone, Ore., Miss Lillian Olmstead of Montana, Mrs. Emma Sagen, of White Fish, and Mrs. Dora Christensen, Omro, Wis. and two half-sisters. Flying Cross Awarded Posthumously The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in South Vietnam has been awarded posthumously to Army Capt. William A. Currence. Currence, a pilot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence F. Currence, Jr., 13829 N. E. 74th St., Redmond, died 15 Jan (1969) when his helicopter crashed after it was struck by enemy fire. Despite enemy fire Currence flew the helicopter "dangerously low" in assisting marines in an encounter with the enemy, the citation read. Seven men aboard were killed in the crash. It was Currence's third tour of duty in Vietnam. He volunteered to return there because "he believed in what his country was doing" there, his mother said. (Seattle Times, Seattle WA, 18 May 1969)

Everett Native Dies in Action in Vietnam Francis D. "Sonny" Campbell, E-2, U.S. Navy, of Norwalk CA, died in action in Vietnam 16 Jan (1969), three days before he was to have returned to the United States. A native of Everett, Campbell, 35, attended Everett schools, and had been in the U. S. Navy for the past 14 years. He leaves his wife, Ida; two sons, David and Robert, and a daughter, Betty, all of Norwalk; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Campbell of Camano Island; sister, Mrs. Bonnie Brayton of Camano Island; and three aunts and an uncle. Dan Holt Killed in Vietnam Spec/4 Daniel Holt, 21, was killed in action in Vietnam last last week his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack D. Holt, 1517 6th Ave. S. Renton, were notified Monday. The young soldier was with the 8th Infantry Division and had been in Vietnam for 10 months. His unit has been engaged in much hard fighting. Born and reared in Renton, Dan attended St. Anthony's School and graduated in 1966 from Renton High. He joined the Army in 1967. Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, John and Bill, a sister, Mrs. Gerald (Patricia) Pleasant and his grandmothers, Mrs. Elizabeth Yates of Renton and Mrs. Florence Holt of Seattle. Pfc. Merle James (Jim) Martin, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Martin Sr., of Omak died of combat wounds in a hospital in Vietnam Jan 28 (1969). He was wounded by a land-mine explosion in Vietnam Jan 14. Born at Omak 26 Sep 1948 he attended school here graduating from high school in 1967. Before entering the Army last April he worked for Biles-Coleman Lumber Co. Survivors include: his parents: his sisters, Genevee Hull, Wenatchee, and Connie Martin, Omak; and a brother Arthur D.Martin, Omak. Precht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Corporal Stohlmeyer Viet victim Death of Army Cpl. Charles J. Stohlmeyer, 21, in Vietnam was reported today, bringing to 42 the number of men with Clark County ties who have died in the war there. The young soldier was the only child of retired Army Master Sgt. and Mrs. Kenneth J. Stohlmeyer of 10814 N. E. 11th Ave. Mrs. Stohlmeyer told The Columbian that she was notified by the Army that her son was killed in Vietnam on 30 Jan (1969), while serving with Company D, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry of the 25th Infantry Division. He had been in Vietnam since last October. A graduate of Evergreen High School and Clark College, Stohlmeyer entered the Army last May, and underwent training at Ft. Lewis before going overseas. The corporal, who was born in Hawaii on 3 Apr 1947, was married to the former Joyce C. Hall of Tacoma, whom he met while they were attending Clark College. He continues to live in Tacoma where funeral arrangements will be made when the body is returned from Vietnam. (The Columbian, Vancouver WA, 6 Feb 1969)

C. J. Stohlmeyer Funeral services will be held in Tacoma Monday for Cpl Charles J. Stohlmeyer, 21, a former Vancouver resident who was killed in Vietnam 30 Jan (1969). the soldier, who sent to Vietnam last October was a member of Company d, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. He had been in the Army since last May. Born in Hawaii on 3 Apr 1947, Stohlmeyer was the son of retired Army Master Sgt. and Mrs. Kenneth J. Stohlmeyer of 10814 N. E. 11th Ave. He was a graduate of Evergreen High School and Clark College. In addition to his parents, the corporal is survived by his widow, Joyce of Tacoma; and his grandmother, Mrs. Laura Stohlmeyer of Platteville WI. The funeral services will be at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View Memorial Park, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd., S. W. Tacoma.
