A Remembrance for Dick Brown from Bud Davis email received 1 Apr 2003
May I say again how happy I am that you are doing this. Dick was a very good friend and I am glad to know that there are others who also care.
I was informed of the web site to look at the men and women killed in Vietnam. When I called up the listing for Dick I was saddened to find that only one person had written anything there. I contacted that person and was told that they did not personally know Dick. The man indicated that he looked up the site and entered some information. I then heard from another person who informed me that Dick had been buried in Washington State and that his wife was buried next to him She died at a very young age also. I did not know her since Dick and I lost track of each other after school. I wish I knew where his children live, I would like to write them and find out some more about their dad and my friend.
Let me tell you some of what I know about Dick. Richard Brown. He and I were in the same class at school. He and I played football together and he was right beside me on the line. I was the center and Dick was a guard. We were considerably smaller in those days. We also spent many days and nights hiking in the mountains of Southern California . It was our joy to troop throughout the mountains and explore old mines and other places. We spent many nights around a campfire telling stories and enjoying being boys without a care in the world. Dick was a good student and he had a great sense of humor. He could spin a yarn and keep us in stitches as well. We often talked about serious issues and we shared the same heartfelt love for God. Dick's folks were very supportive of him and they were an encouragement to all of us. We spent time at his house and mine as well. There were several of us who were close and I am sad to say that after high school we lost track of each other. I married just two weeks after graduation and my focus became that of being a husband and then with kids and work we drifted apart. Dick came to see me some but soon his attention was toward the military. We were at the end of the Korean Conflict and Dick went into the service while I was deferred because of my status.
It was some years later that I received word that Dick had been killed in action in Vietnam. It was a sad day for me but I know Dick was doing the thing that he loved. He had risen to the rank of Major and I am sure he was on his way to great things when he was killed. As I read the message on the web site from the wall I thought that I read that he was perhaps killed by friendly fire. I am not sure of this and if you know I hope you will clarify this for me.
I spoke to another friend, who now lives in Oklahoma, he told me that Dick and his family had come to see him prior to Dicks deployment to Vietnam.
I received a copy of the (obituary) notice in the paper from Washington with a picture but the picture was pretty faint.
I remain Dick's classmate and friend - Bud Davis
