Enumclaw Youth Dies in Japan U.S. Army Specialist Four Larry J. Malatesta of Enumclaw, died 1 Aug (1970) of wounds he received in Viet Nam. According to military personnel at Fort Lewis, Malatesta was commanding a military tank when it hit a mine. He was severely wounded and transferred to the 249th Base Hospital in Japan where he died eight days later. Malatesta entered the service in May, 1969, was sent to Viet Nam in November of the same year where he was based with H-Troop, 17th CAV, 198th Brigade. Services are pending transportation of the soldier's remains to Enumclaw. Survivors include his mother; a sister, Charlotte Coco, Auburn, and his grandmother, Mrs. John Ballestrasse of Enumclaw. WO Phillips Vietnam Fatality Army WO John David Phillips, 20, of 5222 180th Ave. Court SW., who was killed 23 Aug (1970) in Vietnam, had lived in Tacoma five years. He was born in Carlisle PA, and was a 1968 graduate of Clover Park High School. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James A. Phillips Jr., two sisters, Margaret E., and Barbara A., and a brother, James M., all at home; and his grandmothers, Mrs. H. L. Holsopple, of Dayton OH and Mrs. J. A. Phillips, of Bedford VA. War Victim Was Former Lincoln Athlete Spec. 4 Robert G. Simes Jr., 19, of 7014 Tacoma Ave. S., who died 23 Aug (1970) as a result of injuries received in combat in Vietnam, was a former Lincoln High School track star. He was born in Tacoma and lived here most of his life. He was a packer for the Northwestern Drug Co. prior to his enlistment last July. Spec. 4 Simes received an award for being one of the top 500 recruits in basic training in the Army last year and was one of two in his company who had been nominated to attend West Point. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School and was a member of the Lincoln track Squad that set a state record in the mile relay. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Simes, of the home; two sisters, Sharon D. and Linda A., both of the home; a brothers, Rodney E., also of the home; and his grandmother, Mrs. Clara Roberson, of Tacoma. Services will be announced by Lynn Funeral Home. (Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma WA, 1 Sep 1970)
