Remembrance Jim was a classmate from Alderwood Grade school through Bellingham High School. He was a gear head with a great love for old cars and motorcycles and anti-war. He thought that women should go in the military and Vietnam too. He was drafted. He was a good guy - a fair person. I came to the Wall to "stop by". I liked the fellow.

(Extracted MIA report from P.O.W. Network) Douglas Frank Strait was born 29 Jan 1950. His unit was Troop C, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Div. He was an observer on an OH6A helicopter (3 member crew). On 18 Oct 1970, 2 helicopters were on a reconnaissance mission in Binh Tuy Province and while attempting to mark an enemy target, the aircraft was hit by small arms ground fire and crashed into heavy jungle. Shortly after impact, the aircraft exploded violently, clearing 35 mters of undergrowth and creating a 4 foot wide x 3 feet deep crater, scattering the aircrafter over an area of about 50 meters. On 19 Oct a search and recovery team entered the crash site and found the bodies of two of the crew, weapons, and 3 flight helmets. Strait's body was not recovered
