(Pasco Alumi Memories of Ron Schultz) I graduated from PHS in 1971, and Ron Shultz, though two years my senior, was one of my best friends. We attended an ROTC class together. During Spring Break of my senior year, Ron was home on leave from Vietnam and we took a few days to travel to Seattle to see what was left of the Worlds Fair,
have dinner in the Space Needle, and generally goof off. Shortly after that he was killed in Vietnam. He was a Helicopter Pilot, and the story we were told back then was that his ship was shot down while evacuating wounded soldiers from the battle area. Ron graduated in 1969. Two Vietnam Vets at Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant is the final home of many veterans of American wars, from the Civil War to today. In this location are two of our community's young men who died on duty in Vietnam. Part of the host of America's youth who perished in that most troubling conflict, the Vietnam War. Both of these young men grew up on Magnolia, attended Catharine Blaine junior high school and Queen Anne high school.
Capt. Eric G. Herold was born in 1947, graduated from Queen Anne in 1965. In high school he ran cross-country and was in the science club. He was in the Sea Scouts, reaching the rank of Quartermaster (equivalent of Eagle Scout) for which he won a trip to Japan. At the University of Washington he studied oceanography and was in the ROTC, graduating in 1969 with his army commission. In Vietnam he was a "pathfinder" leading Vietnamese troops into battle. His medals include the Vietnamese medal of honor equivalent. He never told his parents of his various wounds until, in November of 1971, in the Mekong Delta, he was critically burned while helping soak the bush with gasoline and it ignited from a spark. In a telegram from the hospital he wrote, "I am fine. Please don't worry. I love you. I'll be okay. Love, Eric". Two days later, at age 24, he died. His parents still live on Magnolia. His grave marker shows he was in Vietnam, won the Army Achievement Medal (AM), 3 Oak Leaf Clusters (OLC) and the Army Commendation (ARCOM). (this a portion of the information submitted by John Hennes Queen Anne Alumni. It is part of the printed text of a cemetery tour of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Queen Anne, Seattle. There is additional information on John Stewart. Another Queen Anne vet. George "Mac" Hightower is buried at Mt. Pleasant.)

Brad Graham Killed in Vietnam Specialist/5 Bradford M. Graham, 21, who expected to be home on Mercer island for Christmas, was Friday killed in an accident in Vietnam.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Graham, said their son has applied for a six-month extension which would have returned him to duty in January. He had been in the Army a little over a year.
Brad, a 1969 Mercer Island High School graduate, was doing what he wanted to do, his parents said. As a medical corpsman he found in his duties the making of a career as a paramedic. He hoped to go to college later, and to become part of Mercer Island's projected "Medic One". He had been a volunteer fireman here.
Last month Brad received the bronze Star for valor under heavy enemy fire.
The citation tells that "even though the night defensive position was still under heavy enemy fire, and as such Specialist Graham was exposing himself to a great amount of flying
shrapnel, he began to treat the wounded (ARVN).
"Working with determination and aggressiveness, Specialist Graham aided greatly in treating the wounded and in their medical evacuation. Although he was repeatedly exposed to hostile fire, Specialist Graham fearlessly continued his mission with complete disregard for his own personal safety, and as a result many lives were saved.
"His personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."
In addition to his parents, Brad Graham is survived by two sisters; Kathy, 19, and Lisa, 5. He was born in California, and the family has lived on Mercer Island since 1963 (MIReporter, Mercer Island WA, 25 Nov 1971)
