Combat Claims Local Soldier
A 21-year-old local man became Othello's first combat casualty in Vietnam when he was killed in action last Saturday. Pfc. Alan Hans Holm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans C. Holm, 905 Elm, Othello, was reported killed by a land mine while in combat in Vietnam. Holm became the thrid local local soldier to die in the southeast Asia war. However, two other casualties lost their lives in non-combat related accidents. The local man had joined the Army on 22 Jul of last year (1970) and had been sent to Vietnam in January of this year. Born 20 Jul 1949 in LaJunta CO, the soldier came to Othello when he was four years old. He attended Hiawatha and Lutacaga elementary schools and graduated from Othello High School in 1968. He was a four-sport letterman at Othello High School participating in football, basketball, wrestling and track. He attended Grays Harbor Community College following graduation and played football there. Survivors include his parents; one sister, Celeste, at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Holm of Swink CO. Funeral services will be arranged by Muscott Funeral Home and are pending arrival of the body. Services are expected to be next week and will be at the Presbyterian Church. Othello Man Dies in Carrier Fire in Vietnam
An Othello man, Lt. Commander Clem Morisette, 33, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Morisette, 675 S. Fourth Street, Othello, was killed recently while serving as a jet pilot off the coast of Vietnam. Marisette was stationed on the aircraft carrier Oriskany off the coast of Vietnam and was due to leave the area with the ship the day before Thanksgiving. The ship was badly damaged by fire last week. Lt. Commander Morisette had been flying missions since 4 Jul (1966) from the Oriskany. A resident of Othello since 1944, Morisette is survived by his parents, his wife Carol, and a daughter, 5. He had been a Navy pilot since June of 1953. He was a graduate of Othello High School and attended Gonzaga University for three years before joining the Navy. Funeral services are scheduled to be held in Spokane. His bady is en route to San Francisco. Burial will be at the Holy Cross cemetery in Spokane.(Othello Outlook, Othello WA 3 Nov 1966)

Rites Pending For Othello Vietnam Victim
Full military funeral rites have been tentatively set here for an Othello Army enlistee who died last Friday in a hospital in Japan where he had been takin for treatment of injuries suffered in Vietnam. Funeral arrangements are pending for Hector L. Ruiz, 21, Othello, until the body is returned from Japan. The Muscott Funeral Home reported funeral arrangements are pending at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Bess Hampton Memorial Gardens with an honor guard scheduled to be present from Ft. Lewis to accord Ruiz full military honors. The Funeral Home reported Ruiz died of severe gasoline explosion burns suffered in support of combat troops. Ruiz was born 15 Oct 1946 in Fort Schute MT. He came here five years ago with his parents and graduated from Othello High School in 1965. He enlisted in the U.S. Army about a year and a half ago and held the rank of Specialist 4th Class. He had been in Vietnam for about three months. Survivors include his father, Benito of Othello; mother, Maria Rafaeda of Othello; two brothers, Narciso and Armando, both of Othello; and four sisters, Mrs. Gregoria Rodriques and Mrs. Consuelo Ortiz of Othello, Mrs. Jasinta Martinez of Eagle Pass TX and Mrs. Maria Mendoza.
