FULL OBITUARY

Marine Butler Marine Private Larry W. Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Butler, Bridgeport has been graduated from eight weeks of recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at San Diego Ca. Under the supervision of veteran noncommissioned officer drill instructors, he learned small arms marksmanship, bayonet fighting, and methods of self-protection. He also received instruction in military drill, history and traditions of the Marine Corps, and other academic subjects. He will undergo four weeks of individual combat training and four weeks of basic specialist training in his military job field before being assigned to a permanent unit. Marine Corps Trains Butler Marine Private Larry W. Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Butler of 616 16th Bridgeport, has completed four weeks of individual combat training at Camp Pendleton CA. During the training period, he received more than 200 hours of instruction in guerlilla (sic) warfare, the use of infantry weapons, combat patrols, and squad tactics. His next assignment is four weeks of basic specialist training to prepare him for a specific job in the Marine Corps. Marines to be assigned to infantry units will be taught sub-specialties such as the technical operation of the machine gun, grenade launcher, or mortar. Those entering highly skilled occupational fields will receive advanced training at resident technical schools. (unknown source - newspaper clipping)

Bridgeport Man Missing in Viet Nam Action Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Butler, Bridgeport, were notified Saturday that their son, Lance Cpl. Larry Butler, had been reported missing in action in Viet Nam Wednesday. The announcement was made by the U.S. Marine Corps. Cpl. Butler, K Company, 3rd Battalion of the Marine Corps, was reported missing in action at Quang Tri. (unknown source - newspaper clipping, 4 May 1967)

Larry Wayne Butler Larry Wayne Butler, 21, died 26 Apr (1967) in Vietnam while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. Larry was born 1 Apr 1946, at Coulee Dam. As an infant he moved with his parents to Oregon and lived there until moving to Bridgeport in 1955. He was graduated from the Bridgeport High School in 1965. He was active in high school athletics and played on the football, basketball and baseball teams and represented the district at the state track meets in high hurdles two years in a row. He was vice president of the student body and class president. Upon graduation he was awarded the American Legion Citizenship Award. He attended Wenatchee Valley College in 1965 and 1966 and played end on the football team. Larry enlisted in the Marine Corps 5 Jul 1965. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Butler, two brothers, Rex and David, all of Bridgeport; and one sister, Mrs. Ron Norbby, San Luis Obispo CA. On Wednesday, 17 May (1967), during the funeral services for Marine Lance Corporal Larry Butler - killed in action in Vietnam - all business in "Our Town" closed their doors in Memoriam. Corp. Robert A. Hayden, 20, of Bridgeport was killed in combat in Vietnam May 24 (1968). He was born 21 Jun 1947 at Moscow ID, and spent most of his life at Bridgeport. In 1965 he was graduated from high school here. He attended Wenatchee Valley College was active in sports and was a drummer in a band. Surviving are his mother and stepfather,Mr. and Mrs. Norwood Green, Bridgeport; his father Lester Hayden, Phoenix AZ, his grandmother, Anna M Monroe, Bridgeport; his brothers Tom of Beaumont TX, Richard in the US Navy and James BeBee, Bothell: five sisters, Anna Mae Powell, Olympia, Ruth Charton, Missoula MT, Betty Whitmore, Mt.Clemmens MI, Jacqueline Philips, Kansas City MO, and Joyce Penney, Kansas City, KS. Remembrance Bridgeport "The Moving Wall" 26 Oct 2003 On May 24 1968 Company A was sweeping through an area of rough terrain 14 miles west of Tam Ky Republic of Vietnam. At 2:12 p.m. they under extremely heavy enemy automatic weapons fire. In the exchange of fire that followed Robert (Hayden) received a gunshot wound. A medical evacuation Helicopter was immediately brought to the scene, but in spite of all efforts Robert died before reaching hospital facilites. unknown handwritten note... memorial book

Remembrance for Bob Hayden by his niece, Sara Hayden Robert was my uncle. He died when I was 6 years old. My dad was his half brother. His survivors included 2 half-brothers, Marion Hayden of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Russell Hayden of Spokane, Washington and 1 half -sister, Agnes Hayden of Davenport, Iowa. Earl Henderson 20, an Army aircraft mechanic, son of Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Henderson of Bridgeport, died 16 Apr (1970) in a plane crash. He was born inPasco 25 Nov 1949 and he came to Bridgeport with his family in 1955. He attended school here. In June of 1968 he entered the army and attended aircraft mechanic school at Ft. Rucker, AL. He was a member of a headquarters company aviation battalion in Vietnam. Surviving besides his parents are: his brothers, Clarence V., Seattle, Dwight D., in Maryland and Noel of Bridgeport; his step brother, Kenneth Sage, American Lake; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Eppery, Hydro OK. S. Sgt. Dennis W. Neal 23 of East Wenatchee, a member of the Green Berets, died as a result of hotile enemy action in Kontum, Vietnam, 15 Apr (1970). He was born 23 Jan 1947 in Wenatchee and attended grade school at Rock Island. He graduated from Eastmont High School in 1965. He was active with the track team in high school and also was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended Wenatchee Valley College for two years, transferring to the University of Washington and attending there until enlisting in the Army 29 Mar 1968. He received his basic training at Ft. Lewis and took paratroop training at Ft. Benning GA. He completed special forces training and was a distinguised honor graduate at the John F. Kennedy Center for Special Warfare, Ft. Bragg NC. He had been in Vietnam since May of last year and was a member of the Special Forces. He was a member and Sunday school teacher at the Church of Nazarene and had 10 years perfect attendance before entering the Armed Forces. (Wenatchee Daily World, Wenatchee 22 Apr 1970 )

Spec. 4 Steven T. Schooler of the United States Army, 173rd Air Borne Brigrade died in action 13 Nov 1969 in Vietnam, The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schooler of Rock Island he was born in Wenatchee 16 Dec 1949. He attended Rock Island Grade School. Sterling Junior High and was graduated in 1966 from Eastmont High School. He attended Rock Island Community Church and was active in schools sports especially in track team. He enlisted in the Army one day after graduation from high school. He took his basic training at Fort Lewis and Volunteered for paratroop training at Fort Benning GA. After completing his training he transferred to a special unit of the Paratroop Rangers,completing this training at Fort Bragg NC. He served in Vietnam since June of this year. Surviving besides his parents are: five brothers, Robert C., Lyman, Roy, Hal and Larry all at home. He was preceded in death by his sister Lynn Schooler in 1963, and by his uncle, Maj. Lawrence Acre, five weeks ago in Vietnam. Military services will be announced by Telford Chapel of the Valley. (Wenatchee Daily World, Wenatchee Nov 1969)

Spec. 5, Donald Lee Williamson 21, of the United States Army, 119th Assault Helicopter Company, died in action 15th Nov (1969) when his base camp was attacked in Vietnam. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl C.Williamson of East Wenatchee. Born at Fort Lewis, 23 July 1948, he attended grade school at Silver Lake and high school at Lake Stevens graduating in 1966. During high school he was active in choir and 4-H work. Following graduation he was employed in Everett at Weyerhauser Inc., until coming to Wenatchee in 1967. He entered the Armed Forces in Jan. 1968, and had served in Vietnam since January of this year. Surviving are his parents; three brothers Roy L. Williamson, Monroe, Steven D. and Gary D. Williamson both of home: one sister Janice K. Williamson, Wenatchee; and his grandmother Mrs. Frances William, Everett. Telford's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
