Soldier's Life Was Dream of Victim
A Spokane youth who always wanted to be a soldier has become the third fatality from this city in a month in the fighting in Viet Nam. Killed last Saturday at Quang Ngai on the central coast of Viet Nam was Marine Sgt. Charles E. Anderson, 24, who attended North Central High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was only 16. Mrs. Charles E. Anderson, mother of two small children, said she had received a letter from her husband on the Friday before his death in which he wrote "the going is rough, but I am doing what I want to do."
Wanted to Be Soldier
" For as long as I can remember he wanted to be a soldier," said his mother, Mrs. Gladys Eggers, E3725 Ermina. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Eileen Simpson, Alaska, and Mrs. Susan Douglas, Spokane, His own children are Charles E. Anderson Jr., 21 months, and John Luther Anderson, three months, who was born after his father left for overseas. They live with their mother at E6920 Second. Sergeant Anderson told his wife he was taking part in "Operation Double Eagle," after completing three days rest leave at Chu Lai. He had been in Viet Nam less than two months. Prior to that he was assigned to Camp Pendleton CA as a platoon leader and instructor.
Dies In Viet Nam Marine Sgt. Charles E. Anderson, 24, of Spokane, has become the third local man killed in the Viet Nam War since early February. It was announced on Tuesday that he died of head wounds last Saturday. His wife and two children live at E6920 Second, and his mother at E3725 Ermina. In addition to the three Spokane men killed recently two men who formerly lived in Spokane have been killed in Viet Nam since Aug. 1963. (Spokesman Review, Spokane WA 9 Mar 1966)
Researcher comment - Death of 5 Washington State men
The plan - Operation Utah called for using one battalion of ARVN paratroopers and one battalion of Marines to drive the 21st NVA Regiment out of the area northwest of Quang Ngai City. The ARVN's would be brought in first to secure the Landing Zone and then would be reinforced by the 7th Marines. Together they would move up Highway 527 taking out the enemy as they found them. It was easy to say and very difficult to do as the enemy, 2 full battalions, was well entrenched.

State remembers 4 who died Olympia --
A band played God Bless America, a bugler blew Taps, a son and father were remembered and four Washington men who died in the Vietnam War were honored in a short but emotional ceremony at the state capital Friday.
"It was very nice," said Julie Donaldson of Lacey, whose father, Elmer O. Wray, was killed in the Philippines in 1973 (sic).
She held her 9-month old son, Steve, while her husband Wayne held their 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Sherry, throughout the ceremony. It was an emotional experience for her, she said quietly after the ceremony as a young woman wearing a shirt saying "I support Vietnam Vets" came up and hugged her.
The parents of DeLoss "Jack" Anderson of Spokane also attended the ceremony and removed the tape over the name of their son, who died in the South China Sea in 1964. The names of Wray, Anderson, Gary Simkins of Port Angeles and Jan Miller of Spokane will be added to the national Vietnam War Memorial wall in Washington, D. C., in Memorial Day ceremonies later this month.

Remembrance 21 Feb 2003 Paul went to St. Genevives (Catholic School) in the San Fernando Valley. He was about a year younger than myself and we met at a YMCA summer camp in about 1955 or 1956. Paul had an incredibly stout upper chest (hereditary in his family) His chest was 48 inches when he was 17. There is a tragic side to his family. About 1962 his dad went to Taiwan to start a Jet engine rebuilding factory for Pratt & whitney. It was a two year contract with renewal clauses. Paul went with them. About 1964 the family returned to the U.S. for about a month Paul stayed here after that. His dad died of a heart attack in 1965. One of his brothers died about 1966 when he crashed a Piper Cub in the Valley. About a year later Paul died in Viet Nam when he drove over a land mine. I didn't know this about Paul until about 1978. I ran into another fellow that I knew from High School and we got to talking. He told me that Paul had gotten wasted in Viet Nam. I immediately went home and started looking to see if his mom was listed in the phone book. Her name was Jean. I couldn't locate her. I thought of the tragedy that happened to this poor lady over such a short period of time - a husband in 1965, a son in 1966 and Paul a year later. There was another son - I believe they were John and Alan. There was also a daughter born to Jean about 1960. She was probably in her 40's by then. I inquired of the military but was unable to find out anything further about her. Recently I inquired of the military to find out where he was buried. Tis also drew a blank and they referred mt to the National Archives as they keep a record of any Veterans who have been issued grave markers. Paul was always adventurous. We used to hitchhike to various places - a large amusement park in Santa Monica, horse back riding in the mountains, sneaking onto the back lots of some of the movie studios to see the! props. My house was probably 4 or 5 miles from Pauls and he used to walk over to see me often during the summer. I don't know if my ramblings are what you want to include in your obituaries. I have many memories of a fearless young man (not foolhardy) and can imagine that in Viet Nam he didn't cower away from danger. I remember the house he lived in (on Collett in Van Nuys) and wouldn't be surprised if some old neighbors wouldn't still be around there. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of Paul. Didn't expect him to leave this world so soon. I am almost three times as old now as Paul was when he died. I guess I am glad to be here but feel he was cheated of a lot of life experiences by dying so young. I believe he was just a few weeks short of his 21st birthday when he passed on. From the military they had advised that he was in a PAL bowling league (I believe in Washington). That might be another lead for you. Many thanks for your efforts on behalf of our fallen servicemen. I was also in the military (with a Naval Aviation outfit) off the coast of Vietnam from 1963 to mid 1965. I made it back with all my parts.
Respectfully, Mike Duffy 6537 Ranchito Ave. Van Nuys, Calif. 91405.

(MiA extraction from P.O.W.Net Work. Org Phillip Spratt Clark Jr. was born 6 Jan 1946 at Phoenix AZ. On 30 Jun 1968 he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. His Unit was Attack Squadron 113, USS RANGER. On 24 Dec 1972 Lt. Cdr. Clark launched in his A7E "Corsair" with 2 other planes to mine the Chateau Renaud Channel, Quang Ninh Province, North Vietnam. The target area was heavily defended and the weather was extremely poor with low ceilings anf reduced visibility. The three planes ran individual attacks. As the third plane was making his run he saw a parachute floating down through the clouds and heard an emergency radio beeper just prior to bomb release. Clark used his emergency radio to say he was in the water. There were 2 or 3 more transmissions and then the one-way radio contact was lost. Search and Rescue attempts were hampered because of weather and darkness. One month later the Paris agreement was signed. 21 Sep 1978 Lt. Cdr. was declared KIA/BNR. On 3 Nov 1989 his remains were returned to his family. More information is available at pownetwork.org

CITATION - MEDAL OF HONOR
GRANDSTAFF, BRUCE ALAN
Rank and organization: Platoon Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry. Place and date: Pleiku Province, Republic of Vietnam, 18 May 1967. Entered service at: Spokane, Wash. Born: 2 June 1934, Spokane, Wash.
Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. P/Sgt. Grandstaff distinguished himself while leading the Weapons Platoon, Company B, on a reconnaissance mission near the Cambodian border. His platoon was advancing through intermittent enemy contact when it was struck by heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire from 3 sides. As he established a defensive perimeter, P/Sgt. Grandstaff noted that several of his men had been struck down. He raced 30 meters through the intense fire to aid them but could only save 1. Denied freedom to maneuver his unit by the intensity of the enemy onslaught, he adjusted artillery to within 45 meters of his position. When helicopter gunships arrived, he crawled outside the defensive position to mark the location with smoke grenades. Realizing his first marker was probably ineffective, he crawled to another location and threw his last smoke grenade but the smoke did not penetrate the jungle foliage. Seriously wounded in the leg during this effort he returned to his radio and, refusing medical aid, adjusted the artillery even closer as the enemy advanced on his position. Recognizing the need for additional firepower, he again braved the enemy fusillade, crawled to the edge of his position and fired several magazines of tracer ammunition through the jungle canopy. He succeeded in designating the location to the gunships but this action again drew the enemy fire and he was wounded in the other leg. Now enduring intense pain and bleeding profusely, he crawled to within 10 meters of an enemy machine gun which had caused many casualties among his men. He destroyed the position with hand grenades but received additional wounds. Rallying his remaining men to withstand the enemy assaults, he realized his position was being overrun and asked for artillery directly on his location. He fought until mortally wounded by an enemy rocket. Although every man in the platoon was a casualty, survivors attest to the indomitable spirit and exceptional courage of this outstanding combat leader who inspired his men to fight courageously against overwhelming odds and cost the enemy heavy casualties. P/Sgt. Grandstaff's selfless gallantry, above and beyond the call of duty, are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country. 22 in Lewis Unit Found Dead Saigon (AP)
Searchers for a platoon of American infantrymen who called in United States artillery fire on their own position in close-quarter fighting found 22 of the men dead and eight wounded today.
The rescued men said they survived by fooling the Communist troops by playing dead.
The platoon, from the Fort Lewis trained 4th Infantry Division, was cut off from other units yesterday in heavy fighting in the Central Highlands near the Cambodian border.
Other units were unable to fight through to the 30man platoon until early today.
A heavy tool was wrought on the enemy by jet planes, artillery and helicopters. Of the estimated 500 men in the force that attacked the platoon, 97 were found dead. The spokesman said the count would rise.
Planes and artillery pounded what was thought to be the escape route of the Communist force.
The platoon was cut off when it attempted to capture a Communist soldier about 36 miles southwest of Pleiku. As the Americans chased the soldier, North Vietnamese regulars struck.
The last radioed words from the platoon, from a sergeant later killed (Sgt. Grandstaff) , were "I've got only four people left. Bring the artillery in on top of me."
Watching the North Vietnamese approach, one survivor, Pfc. Clifford A. Roundtree, 20, Anderson CA, whispered to another, Melvin W. Schultz, 22, Culver City CA; "Pray, Pray. Only a miracle can save us now."
"Then I went limp all over," Roundtree said. "They thought I was dead. Someone sat on my shoulders and went through my pockets. I could see his boots out of the corner of my eye as I lay with my face in the mud."
Also playing dead, Schultz, a medic, was rolled over on his back, then kicked in the stomach. He said someone jumped on him and sat on his head and that his pockets were emptied.
Specialist 4th Class Kenneth N. Barker, 20, Brownstown IL, faked death by lying face down with his arms stretched in front of him. He said the North Vietnamese foulded his arms across his back, tied his writs, then kicked and rolled him across the ground. His watch was taken and his pockets picked.
The five others rescued were seriously wounded. (Seattle Times, Seattle WA, 19 May 1967)

Note to Spokane County researchers (html programer)... who will be using these pages...
the links will work to the community pages from the obituary pages as long as you don't rename them. I didn't redo the html for the community so all those links are bad... very bad... but perhaps someone in your org will just change them.
The links to outside sources won't work including the everyman index link and the bookstore link... However if you are using DSL with your computer some will work... just not all
I started revamping the box presentation and some of the guy's bios reflect that change. I also started adding the Panel numbers to the bio table... However I've just started and so only guys who died pre April 1967 will have the Panel numbers... I figure at least 4 months to add panel's to all the guys... as I'm also checking links and stuff.
I can at a later date add the panel info...
I suggest just right clicking the jpg's and saving the jpgs to one folder but I'm assuming you got someone to do that also....
I hope this is of help to you...
I know I left you, with an incomplete presentation with errors that you will need to fix... BUT... Today I've put in nearly 8 hours of continual work to pull the bio's and put 'em all together.
and I'm just toooooo tired to do more for yah...
I am giving you permission to use this presentation (with your necessary modifications) but I'm asking that you keep my name, url and email address at the top. This work represents 16 months of my work...
Please remember me when you get pictures and obituaries for the guys I as I would really appreciate that information.
You may delete this note...
