Remembering Timothy Lang
I wrote a book about early helicopter operations in Vietnam during 1962-63 titled "Thunderbird Lounge" (by Major General Robert J. Brandt (R)). The story is about the 33rd Transportation Company (Light Helicopter) (H21) which became the 118th Airmobile Company during June 1963. Tim Lang was in the 33rd when it was stationed at Fort Ord, California. The 33rd moved to Vietnam in September 1962 in a secret move. Tim served with the unit until his death on August 30, 1963. The combat action in which Tim was killed is covered in some detail. He was the first 33rd soldier killed during the war.
Tim was a personal friend of mine and all the rest of the aviators in the unit. The book can be purchased online at either Barnes and Noble or Amazon/Borders.
Sincerely, Major General Robert J. Brandt (R) (email received 14 Oct 2003)

Last September, S.Sgt. Duane C. Schell, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. Molke, E10410 Fourteenth, was killed. His widow and children live at Junction City OR.
In August 1963 Lt. Timothy M. Lang, 26, who was reared in Spokane but whose family had moved to Seattle, was killed in Viet Nam (Spokane Review, Spokane WA, 9 Mar 1966)
Correction of this article We believe this article was a "goof-up" by the newspaper... a Dale Richard McInnis died 7 Mar 1966 different state. We didn't find a newspaper retraction but did find a corrected article with no mention of McGinnis... Mistakes happened ... (a Darilee comment)

Killed by Shots in Viet Action Spec. 4 Samuel James Larkin, 19, Spokane, has been killed by small arms fire in Viet Nam. Spokane relatives have been notified. He was the 13th Spokane soldier killed in Viet Nam. A brother, Donald Larkin, E3403 Jackson, said today the family has been notified of the death of the former Rogers High School student and Spokane native. Spec Larkin was a member of the First Infantry Division, Troop A, Fourth Cavalry stationed about 50 to 100 miles north of Saigon, his brother reported. Spec. Larkin was the son of Mrs. Bertha Larkin, E3328 Jackson, a housekeeper at Sacred Heart Hospital but now in Los Angeles visiting her two daughters.

He joined the Army in Spokane in the fall of 1964 and went to Viet Nam last February. During the same month he was founded in the face by grenade fragments while operating an armored personnel carrier, his brother reported. More recently Spec. Larkin was decorated for his part in driving an armored personnel carrier in a mine field until it was disabled then helping drive off an attack with machine gun fire, his brother reported. Other relatives include two sisters, Mrs. Jose (Roberta) Felix and Mrs. Edwin Fabrenback, both of Los Angeles. (Spokesman Review, Spokane WA)

Life Magazine vol. 22, No. 25, June 27, 1969 plus the Life logo was placed above the article's title, Vietnam ONE WEEK'S DEAD, because, I suspect, the Life publishers knew they were making a statement. In a brief introduction the publishers said that they took the 242 names, released by the Pentagon for the week of May 28 thro June 3 because it included Memorial Day. They contacted the families of these men and received pictures for all but 25. They also received "letters home" which the staff writer used in a brief, heart wrenching one page commentary. The article's goal as stated in the introduction...
"More than we must know how many, we must know who.
The faces of one weeks' dead, unknown but to families and friends,
are suddenly recognized by all in this gallery of young American eyes."
The article has been given credit for 'outing' the war ... But the article didn't tell a complete story because The men featured in the article were all Hostile Killed. The Non-Hostile deaths were NOT included and nor were all the hostile died reported. Researcher comments (much edited)

Lt. Peterson, Ephrata, Killed in Vietnam Lt. William J. Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Peterson of Ephrata, was killed in Vietnam on May 19 (1969) in the battle for Hamburger Hill. Lt. Peterson was graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, and from Gonzaga University. He is survived by his parents; his brother Philip, attending Eastern Washington College, Cheney; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert Gogerty, Seattle, and Barbara Peterson, Ephrata. Services will be announced later by the NIcoles Funeral Home in Ephrata. (Wenatchee Daily World, Wenatchee 28 May 1969)

Citation - Medal of Honor
REASONER, FRANK S. Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, Company A, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Marine Division. Place and date: near Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, 12 July 1965. Entered service at: Kellogg, Idaho. Born: 16 September 1937, Spokane, Wash.
Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. The reconnaissance patrol led by 1st Lt. Reasoner had deeply penetrated heavily controlled enemy territory when it came under extremely heavy fire from an estimated 50 to 100 Viet Cong insurgents. Accompanying the advance party and the point that consisted of 5 men, he immediately deployed his men for an assault after the Viet Cong had opened fire from numerous concealed positions. Boldly shouting encouragement, and virtually isolated from the main body, he organized a base of fire for an assault on the enemy positions. The slashing fury of the Viet Cong machinegun and automatic weapons fire made it impossible for the main body to move forward. Repeatedly exposing himself to the devastating attack he skillfully provided covering fire, killing at least 2 Viet Cong and effectively silencing an automatic weapons position in a valiant attempt to effect evacuation of a wounded man. As casualties began to mount his radio operator was wounded and 1st Lt. Reasoner immediately moved to his side and tended his wounds. When the radio operator was hit a second time while attempting to reach a covered position, 1st Lt. Reasoner courageously running to his aid through the grazing machinegun fire fell mortally wounded. His indomitable fighting spirit, valiant leadership and unflinching devotion to duty provided the inspiration that was to enable the patrol to complete its mission without further casualties. In the face of almost certain death he gallantly gave his life in the service of his country. His actions upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service. Whidbey Pilot Lost Over China Lt. (j.g.) J. Forrest Trembley Jr. of Spokane may have been the pilot whom Red Chinese claim they captured after he parachuted from his crippled Navy fighter over China's Kwangsi Province.
Peking Radio reported in a Chinese- language broadcast monitored in Tokyo that one of four American fliers in two U. S. Navy fighters shot down was captured and indicated the others were killed.
Trembley's wife said here the Navy informed her that her husband was missing in action. She said she was instructed to release only her husband's name, rank, serial number and date of birth to the public for Trembley's "own security."
She said a report that her husband may have strayed over the Red China border and disappeared did not conflict with what she had been told, but she referred all other questions to the 13th Naval District in Seattle.
A spokesman for the district confirmed that Trembley was missing and could have gone off course into "Red China air space" but declined to say if the pilot was down inside Red China.
Sources in Washington, D. C., said Trembley's plane was last seen heading into a cloud over North Vietnam about 1 1/2 miles from the Red China border. A beeping sound was heard a short while later indicating the pilot had ejected.
Trembley was from Attack Sqdn 196, which was based at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station before being sent to the Far East. Spokane newspaper article - (The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham WA, Wednesday, 29 Aug 1967)

(MIA information Extracted from P.O.W.Network.org)
Lieutenant Commander "J" Forrest G. Trembley was born 28 May 1942 at Norwich CT. His town of record was Spokane WA. He was a member of Attack Squadron 196, that flew from the USS CONSTELLATION. On 21 Aug 1967 He was the bombardier/navigator aboard one of 4 Intruders assigned to strike the Duc Noi rail yard four miles north of Hanoi. On their way to the target his craft was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Instead of returning to the ship alone the crew continued to the target. A weather front had developed behind them. After reaching the target, two of the remaining Navy Aircraft were forced by weather and anti-aircraft fire into Chinese Air Space and were shot down. Some of these men were captured and later released. There was never any word about Trembley. His body was never found. (P.O.W. Network has a very detail accounting of this incident... 3 Navy Planes and 2 Air Force Bombers were shot down on that mission in 21 Aug 1967.)

Note to Spokane County researchers (html programer)... who will be using these pages...

the links will work to the community pages from the obituary pages as long as you don't rename them. I didn't redo the html for the community so all those links are bad... very bad... but perhaps someone in your org will just change them.

The links to outside sources won't work including the everyman index link and the bookstore link... However if you are using DSL with your computer some will work... just not all

I started revamping the box presentation and some of the guy's bios reflect that change. I also started adding the Panel numbers to the bio table... However I've just started and so only guys who died pre April 1967 will have the Panel numbers... I figure at least 4 months to add panel's to all the guys... as I'm also checking links and stuff.

I can at a later date add the panel info...

I suggest just right clicking the jpg's and saving the jpgs to one folder but I'm assuming you got someone to do that also....

I hope this is of help to you...

I know I left you, with an incomplete presentation with errors that you will need to fix... BUT... Today I've put in nearly 8 hours of continual work to pull the bio's and put 'em all together. and I'm just toooooo tired to do more for yah...

I am giving you permission to use this presentation (with your necessary modifications) but I'm asking that you keep my name, url and email address at the top. This work represents 16 months of my work...

Please remember me when you get pictures and obituaries for the guys I as I would really appreciate that information.

you may delete this note.
