Captain Gary Bitton Dies of Gunfire in Viet Nam
The war in Viet Nam, which appears unreal and far away was brought home to Blackfoot Tuesday with the report of the death in Viet Nam of Air Force Captain Gary W. Bitton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Myron D. Bitton, 501 E. Pacific and a nephew of Ronald Bitton, 317 S. Shilling.
Captain Bitton, pilot of an RB26 Reconnaisance plane, was killed 6 Dec (1963) when the plane crashed in the Mekong River 35 miles south of Saigon in Viet Cong infested territory in Dinh Tuong Province.
Three other Americans and a Vietnamese observer died in the crash, which was attributed to Viet Cong gunfire. Due to the heavy concentration of Viet Cong guerrillas in the Mekong Delta area, it required several days to recover the wreckage of the aircraft and the remains of Captain Bitton and his crew.
The family of Captain Bitton has been advised by Air Force Headquarters, Washington D.C. that the body will be returned to the United States with military escort and flown to San Francisco for burial with honor at the Golden Gate National Cemetery San Bruno CA.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, 19 Dec (1963) at the Mather Air Base Chapel San Francisco.
Captain Bitton attended school in Blackfoot, graduating from Blackfoot High School in 1954. He was an honor student in high school and a star athlete in football and basketball. He achieved a degree in physical education at Brigham Young University.
He was married in his final year of school in Provo (UT) to Miss Joyce Reams, Can Carlos CA, also a student at Brigham Young University.
He is survived by his wife and three children, Michele, Karen and Scott; his parents; a brother, Dee M. Bitton, and a sister, Barbara Bitton. (Blackfoot News, Blackfoot ID, 18 Dec 1963)

When killed he was on a return flight from an evacuation mission and the helicopter was about one mile from landing. the bodies of Allred and two companions were found on a beach. They were shipped to Saigon for autopsy.
His wife received a telegram from the army about 9 a.m. Sunday, stating that her husband was missing on the flight. A later telegram confirmed his death.
The Allreds have traveled in several countries and they just returned to Twin Falls from abroad in June. Captain Allred was sent to Viet Nam for a one year stay. He would have completed six months on Christmas.
Captain Allred was graduated from Twin Falls high school in 1943 and was married to Esther Faler on 8 Apr 1948 in Twin Falls.
