Lt. James Smith killed in Vietnam
Lt. James A. Smith of Blackfoot was killed in Vietnam Friday, only 12 days after he had arrived there as a member of Headquarters Co., First Infantry.
Lieutenant Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thom B. Smith, 996 S. University, Blackfoot.
His father said Tuesday evening no details of the death had been given to him; but that his son died about 5 p.m. Friday somewhere in the Saigon area. The family was informed they would receive more information today, he said.
After leaving Blackfoot less than a month ago, Lieutenant Smith had two weeks of survival training in the Panama Canal Zone before being sent to Vietnam.
The 22-year-old lieutenant was a 1964 graduate of Blackfoot High School. He attended Boise College and officers' training school.
The lieutenant's body had arrived at Oakland CA, Monday. Funeral arrangements are pending. (Blackfoot News, Blackfoot ID, 17 Sep 1968)
