Remembrance John Lynn Powers from the VCCM, Inc. and Sharron Larter Akers
Powers John Lynn
United States Army
-1971
John Lynn Powers was born on October 13, 1949 to Charlie and Evelyn Powers. John went to school in Mackay. He was single during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Military records show that he belonged to the 101st Abn, Division C Company 159th Avn Bn. On February 15, 1971, John Lynn was killed by hostile firing and died. For years, he was considered missing in action and an air loss, crashing on land in a helicopter-noncrew. Years later a watch was found and identified as John’s and his remains identified. This removed him from the MIA list to the KIA list.
Thank you so much for the information. John Lynn Powers has been taken off the MIA list and changed to KIA. They found remains and it was identified as him. Powers parents went to WA DC and meet the president when this was determined. I am sure it brought some closure for the family. John's father died shortly after that and I can't find his mother. I have these three names, but am searching for information about them. I am going to do an attach for you that we (the VCCM, Inc.) have compiled on Piva. You may use any part of it that you wish. I have a short bit on Powers and nothing on Wilson, at this time.
John Lynn Powers, there can never be enough thanks given for your service
to our country. We thank you from the depths of our hearts
for you paid the ultimate price for freedom.

MIA information extracted from PowNetWork.Org WO1 Jon M. Sparks was co-pilot of a UH1C helicopter. On 19Mar71, the helicopter was to provide protective fire while efforts were made to rescue a downed helicopter. The landing zone (LZ) was "hot" and the aircraft received enemy gunfire. The Pilot was able to report the damage and make an emergency landing on the LZ close to the the ARVN perimeter (good guys). It was immediately hit on the roof by a mortar round. All crew members had exited the aircraft when it was hit and the rear gunner joined the ARVN unit. This was a battle. Last seen the three crewmen were alive at the helicopter. Their well being not confirmed. The helicopter received several more mortar rounds. Other aircraft did not see the crew after some of the rounds had landed.

Capt. Gregg N. Hollinger was one of 4 passengers aboard a U21A aircraft (call sign "Long Trip41) that was flying an administrative mission fromPhu Bai to Da Nang. About 15 miles NE of Da Nang, the pilot reported that he had lost his number 2 engine and had a fire. Within minutes radar and radio contact was lost. It is assumed that the pilot attempted to ditch at sea but inclement weather and poor visibility hampered the search. No trace was found of the plane nor the 6 men aboard.

The mission ran into equipment failure, MIGS, and SAMS. The crew bailed out it was reported by a crew member that he counted all the parachutes deployed and working but he thought one of the men was unconscious. Three survivors were captured and eventually released in 1973. These three had not been reported as captured alive and it was a shock to the US when they returned safely. One man is still missing... but two other crewmen's remains were returned to the US including those of Alley. On 18 DEC 88 Gerald Alley came home.
