SILVER STAR AWARDED POSTHUMOUSLY TO SACO SOLDIER KILLED IN VIETNAM
The Silver Star was awarded posthumously Tuesday night at Army Reserve headquarters in Great Falls to PFC Kenneth M. Knudson, Saco, killed in action in Vietnam 16 Mar 1966. It is the first Silver Star awarded to a Montana serviceman for service in Vietnam, according to Army sources. Brig. Gen. John P. Connor presented the medal to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth G. Knudson before a full assembly of men and officers, and the entire junior and senior classes of Saco High School
Knudson was called to service in July, 1965, and had been in Vietnam three weeks at the time of his death. His other Army decorations included the Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Combat Infantryman's Badge.
He was a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
Knudson was killed while trying to silence an enemy heavy machine gun emplacement about 40 yards to the front of his position. His attempt, the citation said, "inspired the remaining comrades to hold their positions and eventually defeated the insurgents." (Tribune - Leader, Great Falls MT, 1 Feb 1967)

Saigon Blast Claims Life of Montanan
Stevensville MT -- Sgt. Carl L. Munsey, 25, was killed in action in South Viet Nam according to a report received by his family here Wednesday. Information relayed through U.S. Army sources in Missoula said Sgt. Munsey was killed in a land mine explosion near Saigon. He was serving in the Army's 1st Division.
Born 25, May 1940, in Bluefield WV, Sgt. Munsey enlisted in the Army in 1958. He had been stationed in Colorado and South Carolina until being ordered to Viet Nam just three weeks ago. Survivors include his widow, the former Barbara Lockridge of Stevensville, and three children; his father, O. L. Munsey of Bluefield, and a brother and a sister also living in West Virginia. Mrs. Munsey and the children have been living in Stevensville for the last three months at the home of her mother, Mrs. Karl Lockridge, Ravalli County superintendent of schools.
