Butte funeral being arranged for sailor killed in Vietnam
Mr. and Mrs. William J. Cawley, 1022 Porphyry, Tuesday awaited word from the Navy as to arrival in this country of the body of their son, Seaman Robert William Cawley, 20. The Butte native was killed in action in Vietnam 14 Mar (1968). Word at his death was received by the Cawleys Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Cawley Tuesday attended funeral services for Mrs. Cawley's father, Ison J. "Ike" Smith, 91, who died here Saturday.
The body of the eighth Butte area man to die in Vietnam will be flown from Vietnam to San Francisco and then to Butte. The Navy will provide a military escort and military honors at funeral services here. The Richards Funeral Home will be in charge of the services. Vic Adm. B. J. Sommers Jr., chief of Navy personnel, Washington D. C., notified Mr. and Mrs. Cawley of their son's death. Butte Navy recruiting personnel extended their services in to the bereaved family.
Semen's wired the Cawleys their son was killed when the armored troop carrier he was serving on struck a mine in the Sung Thach Han river district in South Vietnam. The carrier was serving in a river security group action known as "Task Force Clearwater."
The young seaman was serving his second tour of duty in the Navy. He was a member of the Navy Reserve here and entered active service with the Navy as a reservist in August of 1965. After two years he re-enlisted in the regular Navy in September of 1967. He was home last in August of that year and told his parents he felt he "just had to go back.: Altogether, including the last six months of his second tour of duty, he had served nearly two years in Vietnamese waters.
Seaman Cawley was born here on 29 Jun 1947. He attended Butte grade schools and was graduated from Butte High School in June of 1965. He was a member of the National Thespians in high school and was awarded the highest honor that group can offer, a plaque for excellence in dramatic arts. He also took part in plays with the Butte's Froehlich Theater.
During his boyhood he was a mule carrier for the Montana Standard, Tuesday the Cawleys received many calls including many of the young seaman's former newspaper route customers The boy also had been active in First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, surviving relatives include a sister, Linda, 17; his grandmother, Mrs. I. J. Smith, Butte, and numerous uncles and aunts and cousins in Butte, Spokane and Libby.
