Green Beret Member Dies in Viet Nam Allen G. Wells died 17 Aug (1966) in Viet Nam, where he was a member of "Green Beret" special forces. He was born 29 Oct 1944 in Portland, and came to Tigard in 1956. He attended Tigard high school and graduated in 1963. He enlisted in the army 16 Jan 1964 and was accepted by the special forces after training at Fort Ord CA and Fort Benning GA. After training at Fort Bragg, NC, he left for Viet Nam in Oct. '64. He served there for one year in Saigon and won the Army Commendation medal and the Vietnamese paratrooper's wings. He returned to the U.S. in Oct. '65 and in Feb. '66 volunteered to return to Viet Nam. He was assigned to the special forces, and for the past sic months was in combat in the central highlands as an advisor to the South Vietnamese. He was "killed in action while engaging hostile forces," He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. G. Wells of Tigard, and two brothers, William T. and Charles E., both in the U.S. Air Force. Funeral services are today at 1 p.m., at Young's Funeral Home. Vault entombment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Portland. (Tigard Times, Tigard OR, 25 Aug 1966)
