Lets Win A War," Captain Said - Then The Helicopter Hit A Mine.
By Leverett Richards Staff writer The Oregonian.

I've decided the name of the house I am going to build someday will be "The House With A Song In Its Heart.'"
That's the dream Marine Capt. Brooke Shadburne of Ashland, had in his heart when he wrote his last letter to his mother, Mrs. H. Deacon Shadburne, in Ashland, 28 Feb (1967). Only he won't be building that house.
He and his helicopter were blown to bits by a Viet Cong mine 6 Apr (1967) while Capt. Shadburne was trying to rescue a party of wounded Marines near the demilitarized zone, in South Vietnam.
Capt. Shadburne married to Sue Klink, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester A. Klink, 2648 SW Sherwood Dr., had time to write only because he was laid up with a back injury for a few days at his Marine base on Marble Mountain near Da Nang in the northern part of South Vietnam.
He loved music and was drinking in the soothing strains of his hifi as he wrote "As I see it, we are currently trying to expand our THOR (Tactical Area of Responsibility) so that we control the people inside that area. We than give them tin to rebuild a model village and a school.
Idea Sounds Great.
"Gradually the idea is to push out the VC, educate the children, prove that we are good white people, not bad like the French, and help them establish moderate agarian reforms.
'Sounds Great'
" But a half mile south of our Marble Mountain Air Facility Helo Base at Da Nang there is a tiny village, typical of so many thousand in the area. Within the last year, it has "lost" two mayors.
"The first was kidnapped. The second was killed along with his family. The present one had his young son's fingers broken by the VC and finger nails pulled out one by one.
"Today there was a three-year old girl in the hospital daughter of an ex-town chief. The chief and his wife were beaten and killed in view of the child and then the little girl was beaten.
Cong Own Night.
"She is disfigured but still alive in our hospital at 3 years of age.
"How can we educate during the day? How can we expect a stable government when we only own the day and in the night the VC come in with a new Russian sub-machine gun to cast their own brand of veto to any local election?
" They extract their rice tax, grab the youth for recruits and by day- who is to know? They wear black P.J.s and straw hats like every one else." Said Capt. Shadburne,
"We can't win hearts! Lets win a war!"
He advocated all-out measures such as cutting off all of North Vietnam's supplies by land, sea, air, cutting off the flow of men and material into South Vietnam; making a " mighty sweep" through South Vietnam to clean out remaining guerrillas.
"Then, and only then, rearm, train and supervise the ARVN (Army of Vietnam), teach the children, aid the Homeless, help in agrarian reform. Only then will it do any good."
"I personally can't see coming back after six months Stateside to this kind of (half war). I plan to turn in my regular commission, resignation next month and hope they buy it.<"
His reasons, he said, were primarily a young family (three children, aged 4,2, and 1).
"It simply isn't fair to be gone two-thirds of the time, risking my life to enforce in a very questionable way a very questionable foreign policy."
Today, Memorial Day. the flag for which he fought and died flies over Capt. Shadburne's grave in Plano TX. The Oregonian, Portland OR, Memorial Day 1967)

Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. On 21 April 1967, during Operation UNION* elements of Company F, conducting offensive operations at Binh Son, encountered a firmly entrenched enemy force and immediately deployed to engage them. The marines in Pfc. Martini's platoon assaulted across an open rice paddy to within 20 meters of the enemy trench line where they were suddenly struck by hand grenades, intense small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. The enemy onslaught killed 14 and wounded 18 marines, pinning the remainder of the platoon down behind a low paddy dike. In the face of imminent danger, Pfc. Martini immediately crawled over the dike to a forward open area within 15 meters of the enemy position where, continuously exposed to the hostile fire, he hurled hand grenades, killing several of the enemy. Crawling back through the intense fire, he rejoined his platoon which had moved to the relative safety of a trench line. From this position he observed several of his wounded comrades Lying helpless in the fire-swept paddy. Although he knew that 1 man had been killed attempting to assist the wounded, Pfc. Martini raced through the open area and dragged a comrade back to a friendly position. In spite of a serious wound received during this first daring rescue, he again braved the unrelenting fury of the enemy fire to aid another companion Lying wounded only 20 meters in front of the enemy trench line. As he reached the fallen marine, he received a mortal wound, but disregarding his own condition, he began to drag the marine toward his platoon's position. Observing men from his unit attempting to leave the security of their position to aid him, concerned only for their safety, he called to them to remain under cover, and through a final supreme effort, moved his injured comrade to where he could be pulled to safety, before he fell, succumbing to his wounds. Stouthearted and indomitable, Pfc. Martini unhesitatingly yielded his life to save 2 of his comrades and insure the safety of the remainder of his platoon. His outstanding courage, valiant fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty reflected the highest credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
