Exception Made In Rites for GI Killed in Vietnam
The U.S. Army is sending the body of a young paratrooper, killed in Vietnam two days after Christmas, to Portland so his parents can have a funeral service for him before his remains are sent to Martins Ferry OH for burial.
The dead soldier is Pfc. David L. Boggs, 19, who was killed by enemy fire 27 Dec 1967. He was with the the 101st Airborne Division. Pfc. Boggs was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hildred A. Boggs, 1327 SE Morrison St.
Ordinarily the Army sends the remains of the soldiers killed in Vietnam to the place of burial by the most direct route, but has made an exception for Pfc. Boggs.
His parents want him buried in the family plot in Martins Ferry where the family formerly lived, but want a funeral in Portland first because they cannot afford to go to Martins Ferry.
The soldier's father has had a series of strokes and has not worked since last July.
"Our only income is what Mrs. Boggs earns baby-sitting," he said. "I'm behind in my rent. I don't know how much longer they'll carry me." the elder Boggs said.
The Boggs have nine children. "Eight now that David's gone," Boggs said. The four youngest children are being cared for in foster homes.
Boggs bought the burial plot in Martins Ferry when his first wife died 22 years ago.
Why doesn't he get another here? "I've had nothing but bad luck ever since I came out here six years ago. As soon as I'm able, I'm going to move my family back to Martins Ferry.
"David left just about this time last year," Mrs. Boggs said. "He had a car and drove to Dallas TX, where he enlisted in the Army. When he left, he said. 'Goodby, Mom, I'll see you sometime.' Now he's gone."
An Army spokesman said the body was expected to arrive in Oakland CA, Tuesday. He added that the Portland funeral probably will be Thursday.
Mt. Scott funeral director Ed White has volunteered his chapel and other facilities for the Portland service.
Mrs. Lucille Parsons, of Kelso WA, district commander of the DAV auxiliary said she is going to try to raise the money to send the Boggses to Martins Ferry to attend the burial service. (Oregonian, Portland OR, 3 Jan 1968)

Kin to See Son's Burial Funds raised by veteran organizations will enable the family of a Portland soldier killed in Vietnam to attend his burial service in Martins Ferry OH. The Army granted an exception to its usual procedures when it became known the family of the war victim, Pfc. David Boggs, 19, could not afford to attend the Ohio service. The father, Hildred A. Boggs of 1327 SE Morrison St., asked that his son be buried in Ohio with the remains of the elder Boggs' first wife. After learning of the family's financial condition, the Army agreed to route the soldier's body to Portland for service before shipping it to Ohio. News stories about the situation produced an offer of financial assistance from the Disabled Veterans Association and money was raised for the trip. Mrs. Boggs said Wednesday night she, her husband and a son, Eldred, will fly to Martins Ferry Saturday. The Portland service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Mt. Scott Funeral Home. (Oregonian, Portland OR, 4 Jan 1968)
