Operation Tuscaloosa
A Book was written by John J. Culbertson about 4 days in January 1967. While the whole book would be an important read for understanding the last few days of 2Lt. Earl Frederick Smith. His last battle begins Chapter 27 and ends on Chapter 29 with the statistics 57 enemy KIA (no WIA found); 12 Marines KIA; 42 WIA and 32 of those evacuated. Final count would be 17 Marines dying on a sandbar island in hostile Song Thu Bon valley. Four days of hell, horror, and courage. . . OPERATION TUSCALOOSA 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, at AnHoa, 1967 by John J. Culbertson, copyright June 1997, publisher Ivy Books.

Extracted information from the POWNetwork) Major Lloyd F. Walker was the pilot of a 12th Air Commando Squadron UC123B which was sent on a defoliation mission (Agent Orange) on 31 Jan 1967 over Laos. As the aircraft leveled off to start spraying it's propeller was struck by hostile fire. The aircraft crashed about 5 miles south-southwest of Sepone in Savannakhet Province, Laos. After an investigation it was decided that Major Walker and his crew of 4 (which consisted of 3 captains and 1 Airman 1st class/flight mechanic) had died in the crash. Not one of the nearly 600 Americans who are listed as missing in Laos were returned. More information about this incident is available at PowNetWork.Org
