MEDFORD MARINE DIES IN 'COPTER CRASH IN VIETNAM
Marine Cpl. Fred D. Graten, 20, son of Mrs. Claude Dale Norris, 1411 Euclid Ave., Medford, was killed 11 Apr (1968) in the vicinity of Dong Ha Vietnam in a mid-air crash with another helicopter.
His wife, the former Susan Lowery, Medford, is a student at Hayward CA Junior College.
Cpl. Graten was a crew chief on a medical evacuation helicopter with the 163rd Division and had been flying medical evacuation missions into Khe Sanh. He suffered multiple injuries when the helicopter in which he was riding was involved in a mid-air collision with another one, according to the Marine Corps.
Graduated in 1965 Cpl. Graten was born 19 Sep 1947 in Medford and was graduated from Medford High School in 1965. He was a member of the gun club and was active in wrestling and football. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps immediately following his graduation. He was married 15 Mar 1966.
The Marine had been in Vietnam for 6 1/2 months and spent his week of rest and recuperation leave in Hawaii with his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Norris late last month. He returned to Vietnam 17 Mar (1968).
Survivors in addition to his wife, mother, and stepfather include a daughter, Gidget Annette Graten and a sister, Mrs. Donald Lowell Camp, Medford.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors.

Rites Slated For Private Service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Pearson's Mortuary for Pfc. Gale Eugene Craun, 20, of 19128 NE Hassalo St., who was killed in Vietnam 26 Apr (1968). Pfc. Craun was born in Portland 23 Nov 1947, and attended Clackamas and Reynolds high schools. He was active in football and swimming. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Weitzel; and two brothers, Charles and Daryle Weitzel. He will be buried in Willamette National Cemetery. DAN KILGORE KILLED IN VIETNAM Marine Pvt. First Class Dan Kilgore, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kilgore, 1408 Maple Street, Myrtle Point, was killed by enemy action in Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Providence (sic), Veitnam (sic), on 16 Apr 1968. Pvt Kilgore was born 25 Oct 1948 in Raymond WA and lived for a time with his parents in Powers OR moving to Myrtle Point in 1963. He attended elementary school in Powers and high school in Myrtle Point, where he graduated in 1966. While in high school he was a member of the track team, Boys' League and Industrial Arts Club. Before enlisting in the Marine Corps, 16 Oct 1967, he was employed by Powers Veneer Company. He arrived with his unit in Vietnam on 14 Apr 1968. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kilgore, Myrtle Point; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Blanton, Coeburn, VA and Mrs. M. T.
