2 Marines Die In War Two Oregonians serving in the U.S. Marines, Pfc. Rickie Luker of Portland and Cpl. Terry L. Allen of North Bend, were killed in action in Viet Nam. it was announced Tuesday by the Department of Defense. Pfc. Luker was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Shackleford, 9704 SE Cora St.. Cpl. Allen was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Allen of North Bend. Mrs. Shackleford said her son was reported killed 2 Jun (1968) in the vicinity of Quang Nam. He died instantly of fragmentation wounds from bombs that fell short of the target during a friendly air strike. Pfc. Luker joined the service in September, 1967, and had been serving in Vietnam since 2 Mar (1968). Born 25 Aug 1949, he attended Lents Grade School and Marshall High School. In addition to the parents, survivors include five brothers, Michael Lucker with the Army at Ft. Bragg, NC, Dan, Pat, and Shane, all of Portland, and Nick Caputo of San Fernando CA., and a grandfather, John Kratochvil of Portland. Pfc. Timothy L. Strohm A military funeral will be provided at the Requiem Mass Saturday at 10 a.m. for Pfc. Timothy L. Strohm, Enterprise, at St. Katherine's Catholic Church in Enterprise, with interment at Enterprise Cemetery. Pfc. Strohm was killed in combat 30 miles outside of Bong Son on the northern Coast of South Vietnam. The death was announced by the Defense Department 5 Jun (1968). Drafted into the Army in November, Pfc. Strohm had been in Vietnam five weeks at the time of his death. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 15 Jun 1968)

    Recitation of Rosary for Timothy Lawrence Strohm will be held tomorrow (Friday) at the Bollman chapel in Enterprise at 7:30 p.m. and Requiem Mass will be offered by Father Timothy Collins at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Katherine's Catholic Church in Enterprise. Strohm passed away on Sunday, 2 Jun (1968) near Bon Son Vietnam.
    Full military colors and committal will be by the 713th Maintenance Co., of Fort Lewis WA. Vault entombment will take place at the Enterprise Catholic cemetery. Pall bearers will be members of the 713th Maintenance Co.
    Timothy Strohm was born in Enterprise on 28 Apr 1948, the son of Ralph and Helen Strohm. On 2 Sep 1967 he was married to Kitty Luftus at Enterprise.
    He is survived by his wife, Kitty, of Enterprise; parents Mr. and Mrs. Evan Windsor; one brother, Michael; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Strohm and Mrs. Esther Roberts, all of Enterpise. (Wallowa County Chieftain, Thursday, 13 Jun 1968)

Prineville man dies in Vietnam. The number of Oregonians killed in Vietnam this year rose to 120 Friday by Associated Press count -- one more than in all of 1967. The parents of Air Force 1st Lt. James Cox, 21, of Prineville were notified Friday of their son's death in Vietnam 5 Jun (1968). By Associated Press count, 319 Oregon servicemen have died since 1961. Marine Dies In Vietnam A Portland Marine Pfc. Paul Burgard, has been added to the growing list of American servicemen killed in action in Vietnam. His mother, Mrs. Phyllis E. Burgard, 6329 SE 68th Place received word from the Defense Department last week that her son had been killed in combat Thursday 6 Jun (1968). His father, Sylvester Burgard. was recuperating from a leg amputation operation at the U.S.Veterans Hospital in Portland when he received word of his sons death. The parents are divorced. A 1967 graduate of Franklin High School, Burgard had enlisted in the Marine Corps in July, 1967. He received basic training at San Diego and combat training at Camp Pendleton CA.
Father visited. Pfc. Burgard was sent to Vietnam in late December. He had been home in May on emergency leave due to his father's surgery. He died 6 Jun (1968) when a helicopter in which he was riding was shot down by enemy fire near Quang Tri. He was born 6 May 1948, in Aberdeen SD, and came to Portland in 1954. He attended Atkinson Elementary School and had worked six years as a wholesalers shagger for the Oregonian and at Bazar Store. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Douglas, 16, and Mark, 6, one sister Sehila, 13; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake G. Olson, Britton SD. A memorial service has been set for Wednesday, 19 June (1968), at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 16 Jun 1968)

Oregonian Dies in Asia: Portland Man Falls in Action U.S. Army Cpl. Steven J. Miner, Portland, was among the 53 servicemen listed as killed in recent action in Vietnam, according to a release Friday from the Department of Defense. He was killed in combat with the Fourth Division during fighting in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam. A graduate of Grant High School in 1965, Cpl. Miner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Miner, 6635 NE 24th Ave., had been stationed in Vietnam since early January. (1968). Born in Portland, 11 Oct 1947, he had attended Faubion Grade School and played in the Riverside Little League. Following graduation he had attended Portland Community College and had worked for the city water department and Kinney's Shoes.
Trained at Ft. Lewis He was sent to Ft. Lewis for basic training following induction in July, and also received advanced infantry training before being sent to Vietnam. He is survived by his parents; three sisters, Melinda, 19, Carol, 16, and Denise, 14; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Curtis, Perry IA and Mrs. Ruth Miner, San Diego CA. Marine Dies in Vietnam Pfc. Peter Merrill Shepherd, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter D. Shepherd, 4625 SW 35th Place, was killed in action in South Vietnam 6 Jun (1968), his family was notified Thursday. Shepherd was born 23 Nov 1947 and attended Bridlemile Grade School in Portland. He was graduated from Wilson High School in 1966. He was employed by Farrell's Ice Cream Parlors until he joined the Marine Corps in July, 1967. He was assigned to duty with the 26th Marine Regiment in December, 1967. He was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and the Multnomah Athletic Club. Survivors include a brother, Michael, two sisters, Roblay and Kathleen; and his grandmother, Mrs. Guy C. Haynes. Services will be announced in a week or so, when the body is received from Vietnam. War Claims Oregon ManRoseburg (AP The parents of Navy Hospital Corpsman, Rodney Kinyon, 20, of Melrose, said Monday the Defense Department notified them Sunday of their son's death in Vietnam combat. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kinyon said their son was serving as a Navy Corpsman with a Marine Corps unit south of Da Nang when he stepped on a mine Friday and was killed. He had been in Vietnam only one week. Kinyon, a 1966 graduate of Roseburg High School, is the 24th Douglas County serviceman to die in Vietnam. Since 1961, 320 Oregon servicemen have died while serving in Vietnam and a total of 121 Oregonians have died this year. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 11 Jun 1968)

      Corporal Terry Lee Allen, USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Allen, 1911 Maple Street, North Bend was killed in action in Vietnam 9 Jun (1968). Terry was a 1965 graduate of North Bend High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, 8 Aug 1966. He had 12 days to serve before returning home.
      Terry was serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam. He first went to Vietnam 2 Jun 1967 and was wounded, shot through both legs, 28 Jun 1967. He returned to Vietnam earlier this year.
      A buddy he served with for 9 months in Vietnam, LCPL T. Morales from Corpus Christi, accompanied his body to North Bend, Monday, 24 Jun (1968). They were flown by plane to Eugene where Campbell-Watkins met them and brought Terry's body to North Bend.
      Funeral services will be held at the Campbell-Watkins Chapel Friday, 28 Jun (1968) at 10:30 p.m. Full military honors will be accorded by members of the Eugene Marine Corps unit. The Rev. Edwin Schwab, St. Monica's Catholic Church, Coos Bay, will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. (The Sun and North Bend News, North Bend, 27 Jun 1968)

Explosion Kills Oregon Soldier. Eugene Army PFC John Wheeler, a 1965 graduate of North Eugene High School, was killed Wednesday in Vietnam, his family has been notified. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wheeler were told that their 21- year old son was killed in a booby trap explosion. Vietnam War Claims Life of Eugenean
    A 21-year-old soldier from Eugene was killed Wednesday in Vietnam, his family learned Thursday night.
    Pfc. John Wheeler, a 1965 graduate of North Eugene High School, had been in Vietnam a month when he was killed in a booby trap explosion. No further details were available immediately.
    He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wheeler, 1320 Dalton Dr. His wife, Jody, lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bell, 2445 Moore St.
    Wheeler was stationed in Que Quang Tri area with Company C of the Eighth Cavalry.
    After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Oregon and Lane Community College before entering the Army last December. He left for Vietnam 13 May (1968). Wheeler and his wife were married last 30 Jun (1967). He is the Emerald Empire's 36th Vietnam War fatality.
    Besides his wife and parents, he is surveyed by two sisters, both living at home.

Local Couple's Son Killed in Vietnam
      The son of a Milton-Freewater couple was killed in Vietnam when the spotter plane he was piloting was shot down by enemy ground fire.
      Killed was Air Force Major Wayne F. Ferguson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester A. Ferguson, Couse Creek Road. He was piloting a spotter plane on a support mission when the ground fire was encountered, according to reports received Monday by his parents.
      Ferguson is survived by his wife and three children of Clovis NM and a son Charlie of Heppner. (Valley Herald, Milton-Freewater OR)

Oregon Man Dies In War Milton-Freewater Major Wayne Ferguson, 39, flying an Army Artillery spotter plane, was shot down and killed in Vietnam, his parents reported Monday. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ferguson of Milton-Freewater. He was a native of Pendleton and lived in Milton-Freewater before entering the service 18 years ago. He was the 330th death of an Oregon man in the Vietnam conflict and the 130th this year. A Remembrance and a picture for my brother-in-law
He was born in Aberdeen WA
    Went to High school in Portland, First Madison then to Sunset where he graduated.
    He lived in Seattle when he was drafted and when he died that was his residence. He attended Lewis and Clark Colleage in Vancouver WA.
    He leaves behind his loving Brother Brian who still takes care of his grave every month of Washington and another Brother Dennis of CA. His loving mother Marian Danforth and her husband and loving "dad" Jack "Danny" Danforth. He also leaves behind two daughters, Heidi and Shelly, both of California and five grandchilden he has never met. He is loved and missed dearly by Brian and his wife Stephanie, Dennis and wife Elain, His nephews, Andrew, Jason, Ron, and niece Michele who never got the chance to know and love him. He also leaves a treasured wife of only three months who still loves and misses him to this day.

2 Marines Die In The War The Defense Department Friday listed Marine Lance Cpl. Gerald G. Dedmore Jr., 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald G. Dedmore Sr, 4405 NE 84th Ave, as killed in action in the Vietnam War. He reportedly died 18 Jun (1968), of gunshot wounds received in combat in the vicinity of Quang Nam, South Vietnam. Lance Cpl. Capt. Warner Jacobson Longview Capt. Warner Craig Jacobson, 26, Longview WA, was killed in Vietnam 22 Jun (1968) when the military aircraft in which he was riding was struck by automatic weapons fire. He was a U.S. Army battery commander with Battery A Third Battalion, 16th Group of the American Division. He was a 1960 graduate of Milwaukie Union High School, and a 1964 graduate of University of Oregon. He spent 13 months in Korea before being assigned to the Vietnam theater. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George C. Jacobson, a brother, Scott, and a sister, Ann, all Longview. Funeral will be announced when Capt. Oregon Marine Killed In War. Roseburg Marine Cpl. Robert Charles Steel, 20, was killed near Quang Ngai. He was on his second tour of duty in Vietnam. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gale Steele [sic} Sutherlin, said Friday he was hit by small arms fire while on patrol. He is the 335th Oregon man to die in the war in Vietnam and the 136th this year.
