William Richard Klawitter
    Funeral services for Lance Cpl. William Richard Klawitter, Bend Marine killed in Vietnam on 1 Mar (1968) will be held at the Niswonger-Reynolds chapel on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
    Cpl. Klawitter was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon R. Klawitter, 547 Ogden. He was born in Twin Falls ID on 13 Mar 1948 and attended both grade and high schools in Bend. Prior to enlisting in the Marines on 5 Jun 1967, he attended Central Oregon Community College for a year.
    During his basic training in San Diego, Cpl Klawitter was selected as the honor man of his platoon.
    Cpl. Klawitter had planned to wed Karen Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Les Duncan, Bend in November.
    Survivors besides his parents include two brothers, Robert Lee and Gary Ray, both of Bend; a sister, Mrs. Patricia Crow, Rupert ID and a grandmother, Mrs. Adna Belle Acree, Bend. (The Bulletin, Bend OR, Friday 15 Mar 1968)

War Claims 3 Oregonians. 2 Missing Men On Death List Washington [AP] The Defense Department of Defense has reported three more Oregon men have been killed in the Vietnam war. Included on the list of dead were two soldiers who had earlier been reported missing; Spec. 4 Earl H. Hills, son of Mrs. Irene A. Hills of Fairview, and Spec. 4 Paul P. Sonstein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max L. Sonstein, Medford. Killed in action was Marine Lance Cpl. John M.Boyce, whose wife Roseanna, lives in Central Point.Mrs. Boyce said her husband was killed 2 Mar (1968) by small arms fire while serving with the Third Marines in Quang Tri Province. Funeral Tuesday for Cpl. Boyce Funeral services for Marine Lance Cpl John Merton Boyce, 20, who died 2 Mar (1968) in Vietnam, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hillcrest Memorial Chapel on the North Phoenix Road. The Rev. Richard Ralls of the Country Church on Table Rock Road will officiate. Committal will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Conger-Morris Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. Military honors will be provided by the staff of the Inspector Instructor of B Company, 10th Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Corps Division, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Eugene. Cpl. Boyce was born 16 Oct 1947, in Portland, and had lived in Southern Oregon most of his life, graduating from Crater High School in 1966. He was married 12 Jan (1968) to Roseanna Sprinkle, who survivors........ Valley Marine, Cpl. John Boyce, Killed In Vietnam
    Marine Lance Cpl. John M. Boyce, 20, husband of Roseanna Boyce, 4923 Biddle Road, Central Point, was killed 2 Mar (1968) in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.
    Cpl. Boyce was killed by small arms fire while serving with the 3rd Marines at Da Nang. He enlisted in the Marine Corps 1 Aug 1966 and left for Vietnam 26 Jan 1968.
    He married Roseanna Sprinkle 12 Jan (1968). A graduate of Crater High School in 1966, the Marine is the son of the late George Boyce. Central Point. He was born 16 Oct 1947 in Portland.
    Prior to entering the Marine Corps he made his home with his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Cranston, 654 Beall Lane, Central Point.
    Survivors in addition to his widow and foster parents include three foster brothers, Marine Lance Cpl. James Cranston, Okinawa, Donald Cranston, Central Point, and Larry Cranston, Porterville CA and one foster sister, Mrs. Bill Weddle, Medford.

Oregon Marine Killed In War Eugene Another young Marine from Oregon has been reported killed in Vietnam. Lance Corporal Kenneth Martin Krebs of Eugene died 2 Mar (1968) in Thau Thien Province while serving with the First Battalion, 11th Marines. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Krebs, were told this week by the Marine Corps that their son died when an artillery round detonated while still in the gun tube of a 155 mm howitzer. He suffered fatal fragmentation wounds. Funeral arrangements are pending in Springfield. The Marine, whose 19th birthday was last month, attended Springfield High School before joining the Marine Corps in May, 1966. He had been in Vietnam since last September. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Ralph and Wayne at Home and George Krebs in Lorane OR, two sisters Linda at Home and Mrs. Ray Staven of Eugene, and grandparents in Springfield and Ashland.(The Oregonian, Portland OR, 13 Mar 1968)

Area Marine Killed in Vietnam Action A Goshen Marine, Lance Corporal Kenneth M. Krebs, 19, was killed in Vietnam as the result of fragmentation wounds to the body when an artillery round accidentally exploded in a tube while he was on a firing mission on 2 Mar (1968), his parents learned Thursday.
    Mr. and Mrs. Everett G. Krebs were notified of their son's death in a telegram signed by Gen. Leonard F. Chapman Jr., commandant of the Marine Corps. It was delivered to Krebs at his place of employment, the Goshen Division of Mazama Timber Products Inc., by a representative of the Armed Forces.
    In the last letter Mr. and Mrs. Krebs received from their son, on 29 Feb (1968), he said he was at Hue, where fighting was heavy. The fatal incident occurred in the province of Thua Thien, the wire noted.
    The Marine was one of 542 Americans killed in Vietnam in one week, according to a United States spokesman, who added that another 2,191 U.S. Servicemen suffered wounds in action.
    Cpl. Krebs attended Springfield High school before enlisting in May of 1966. He took basic training at Camp Pendleton and had been in Vietnam since last September. He was born 21 Feb 1949 in Eugene and was a member of the Springfield Church of the Nazarene. He also was a former member of Boy Scout Troop 117 sponsored by the Goshen School PTA.
    Besides his parents, he is survived by five brothers and sisters, George Krebs of Lorane, Mrs. Ray (Evelyn) Slaven of Eugene and Ralph Wayne and Linda Krebs, all at home; his grandparents, Mrs. William Wright of Springfield and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Krebs of Ashland.
    Funeral services will be held at Buell Chapel and Interment will be the Lane Memorial Gardens with the date and time to be announced.

Researcher's notes: 1st Battalion, 11th Marines mission 2 Mar 1968 was direct support of the 1st Marines in the conduct of Operation HUE CITY and the defense of the Phu Bai Combat Base. On 1 Mar 68 Battery A fired on VC sanpans in a small canal. Six sanpans were destroyed, five damaged, and 1 structure was destroyed. On 2 Mar 68, Battery W's Gun #3 (155mm How Td) was demolished by the premature burst of an HE round in the tube. Two men were killed LCpl Kenneth M. Krebs and Pfc Wilbur L. Portland GI War Victim. Roesner Listed Missing Earlier. The Defense Department reported Tuesday that Pfc. Dana H. Roesner, 20, of 15106 SE Main St., has been killed in action in Vietnam. He was reported missing in action 2 Mar (1968), by the Army. The son of Charles O. Roesner, the infantryman was born in Portland. A Central Catholic High School graduate, he studied one term at Portland State College before entering the Army in February, 1967. He trained at Ft. Lewis WA, and Camp Polk LA, before going to Vietnam in August. He served with the 4th Division. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Sara and Shelly, and four brothers, Barney, serving with the Army in Germany, and Charles, Robert and Clay, Portland. Captain Slain in Vietnam The Portland parents of U. S. Army Capt. Frank R. Dimmitt have received word that he was killed 3 Mar (1968) in Vietnam action. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dimmitt, 3319 SE 52nd Ave., and the husband of Mrs. Barbara Dimmitt, Beaver Falls PA. Capt. Dimmitt was serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam, and was an intelligence officer and commander of a mortar company. He was in the 101st Airborne Division, and was shot while taking part in helicopter activity. He served his first tour of Vietnam duty in 1965 and was a psychological warfare officer in a Green Berets unit. He had been awarded several decorations including the Bronze Star and Air Medal. He was a graduate of Franklin high School and attend Oregon State University and Pacific University. He entered the Army six years ago and was a career officer. In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include two daughters, Ann and Nancy; and two sisters, Mrs. Joan Beatty and Linda Dimmitt, both Portland. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 8 Mar 1968)

Rites Slated For Captain. A memorial service for Capt. Frank Dimmitt, who died 3 Mar (1968) in Vietnam, will be held Wednesday at 7;30 p.m. in the Kern Park Christian Church. Capt. Dimmitt was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery 14 Mar (1968). An intelligence officer and mortar company commander in the 101st Airborne Division the 30-year old career soldier was killed near Khe Sanh when the helicopter in which he was riding was shot down by small arms fire. Capt. Dimmit was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dimmit, 3319 SE 52nd Ave., and the husband of Mrs. Barbara Dimmit. Beaver Falls, Pa. A former student at both Oregon State University and Pacific University, Capt. Dimmit was serving his second tour in Vietnam. In 1965, he served as a psychological warfare officer with a Special Forces unit. A memorial fund in his name has been established at the Kern Park Christian Church. Former Resident Killed in Vietnam A Marine and a soldier are the latest Oregon servicement to die in the Vietnam war, according to the Defense Department. Killed in action were Army PFC James A. Lesseg, Portland, and Marine PFC. Terry A. Williams, husband of Mrs. Nancy C. Williams of Bandon.
Pfc. Lesseg is formerly of Medford, the son of Mrs. Louise M. Lesseg, now of Portland, and of Warren Lesseg, former Medford lawyer now with the Pioneer National Title Insurance Company as manager of the company's Astoria operation. the family lived in Medford during the 1950's. Klamath Falls Private Killed. Klamath Falls (Special) The parents of John R, Tworek Jr., have been notified by the Department of the Army of the death of their son in Vietnam. The soldier died of injuries received when a military vehicle in which he was a passenger overturned on 9 Mar (1968). The Army said no further details were available. Pfc. Marine Dies Of Wounds. Word has been received that Marine Lance Cpl. Jimmy L.Delano, of 2035 NE Multnomah St., died 13 Mar (1968) in South Vietnam as a result of wounds received in action at Quang Tri. Service, to be at Fisher Funeral Home, Albany, is pending return of the body. Mr. Delano, 23, who had been in Vietnam since January, was born in Salina KS and moved to Albany with his family in 1953. He moved to Portland two years ago. Mr Delano was a graduate of Albany Union High School, and worked as a cement finisher before his enlistment in April, 1966. Survivors include a son, Lesley Dean, Corvallis; the mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. William McLaughlin, Portland; the father, Orville Delano, Albany; a brother, Norman, Albany; three sisters, Mrs. Shirley Johnson, Seattle, Mrs. Carolyn Colbert, Portland; and Mrs. Deanna Rogers, Newport, a grandmother Mrs. Nellie Fields, Tescott KS, and a grandfather, Fred A. Medford Man Dies In Action. Medford Marine Pfc. James Carl Whisnan of Medford has been killed in Vietnam, his parents report. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Whisnan said they were told their son died from gunshot wounds received while on patrol near Quang Nam. Whisnan enlisted in the Marines in 1967. He was the 262nd Oregon man to die in the war and the 63rd this year. (Oregonian)

    Marine Pfc James Carl Whisnan, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Whisnan, 1545 Dakota Ave, Medford, was killed 14 Mar (1968) while on patrol near Quang Nam Vietnam. According to information received here the Marine died from gunshot wounds.
    Pfc Whisnan, a 1966 graduate of Medford High School was with the 27th Regimental Landing Team of the 5th Marine Division which was visited by President Lyndon B. Johnson 17 Feb (1968) as they left the El Toro Marine Air Station CA en route to Vietnam.
    At the time of his death, Pfc. Whisnan was serving with Company, 3rd Battalion, RLT 2nd Platoon, 1st Marine Division Reinforced.
    The Marine was born 22 Jul 1948 in Santa Maria CA and had made his home in Medford since 1952. Prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps 24 Apr 1967 he was employed by Shakey's Pizza Parlor in Medford.
    Survivors include, in addition to his parents, three sisters Mrs. Jackaline Dyer, Mrs. Connie Sue Gould and Vicki Lynn, all Medford. (Medford Mail Tribune, Medford OR, 18 Mar 1968)

Dennis C. Shively
      Marine Lance Corporal Dennis Carl Shively, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shively, Coos Bay, died 24 Mar (1968) in a Da Nang hospital, Vietnam from injuries received in action.
      His body is being brought home and funeral services will be announced from the Mills Funeral Home.
      Born 21 Jun 1949 in North Bend, the lance corporal had lived in this area all his life. He enlisted in the Marine Corps delay program 22 Apr 1966 while he was a senior at Marshfield High School and he began active duty to take recruit training 27 Jun 1966, shortly after his graduation. He was sent to Vietnam 21 Mar 1967.
      In addition to his parents, Shively is survived by sisters, Mrs. Darrell Curtis, Coos Bay, and Mrs. C. B. Breault, Los Altos CA and a grandmother, Mrs. hattie Baxer, Coos Bay. (The World, Coos Bay, Wednesday 27 Mar 1968)

Oregon Soldier Dies In Vietnam.

    Charles L. Hatcher, 19, specialist fourth class in the Army, was killed in Vietnam 26 Mar (1968).
    On Monday, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh S. Hatcher, and his nine younger brothers and sisters will receive his medals in a ceremony at Ft.Lewis WA
    The medals awarded after his death are the Bronze Star Medal with first Oak Leaf cluster for heroism, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and combat infantryman badge.
    Before his death, Hatcher received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign ribbon, parachutist's badge with rifle bar. Born in Denver, 1 Oct 1948, Hatcher lived with his family at 24 SE 194th Ave. He attended Centenniel High School before enlisting in the Army in February, 1966. After training at Ft. Campbell KY, he arrived in Vietnam on his 19th birthday, 1 Oct 1967. He was reported missing after action in a village outside Khe Sanh, and his death was confirmed five days later. He was buried 24 Apr (1968) at Willamette National Cemetery. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 6 Sep 1968)

Portlander Gets Medal. Pfc. Charles L. Hatcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh S. Hatcher, 24 SE 194th Ave., has posthumously received the Bronze Star Medal with V for valor in combat in Vietnam. Pfc. Hatcher rushed through incoming mortar fire to render first aid to two badly wounded men, the citation states. After a corpsman was killed, Hatcher, ignoring his own wounds, resumed treatment of the wounded and moved them to a relatively safe area. Hatcher, who was killed 26 Mar 1968, was also posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and a second Bronze Star Medal. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, 14 Sep 1968)
