VIETNAM WAR CLAIMS LIFE OF CB SOLDIER
Army Specialist Fourth Class Grady R. Nelson, 22, husband of Julie A. Nelson of Coos Bay, was killed in action in Vietnam 23 Nov (1968) the Defense Department has announced. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nelson, Olive Barber Road.
Nelson was sent to Vietnam 10 Sep this year and he was serving with Company C, First Battalion, 25th Infantry Division near Saigon, according to his family. His body will be sent home in a week or 10 days, his wife was informed and funeral services will be held in Coos Bay.
Born in Memphis TX, young Nelson was attending Marshfield High School at the time he enlisted in the Army 29 Jan 1964.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Lonnie Ray, born in Coos Bay 23 days ago. He also is survived by a brother, Carl, in the U.S. Navy in Florida, and two sisters, Mrs. Don Smith and Mrs. Archie Wilson, Coos Bay.
Nelson's death and that of Corporal Daniel E. Spencer Jr., of Bend, announced late Tuesday by the Defense Department raised to 385 the number of Oregon servicemen to die in the war since 1 Jan 1961. The Associated Press count shows that 186 have died this year. (The World, Coos Bay, Wednesday, 27 Nov 1968)
