War Claims Oregon GI Army Pfc. Jon S. Rasmussen, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney C. Rasmussen Jr. 7920 SW Westmoor Way, was killed in Vietnam Monday, the family learned Tuesday. The parents said their son was killed in an armored personnel carrier when it hit a mine on patrol in the Mekong Delta. He had left for Vietnam less than a month ago, 10 Jan (1969), for assignment at Tan An with the 9th Infantry Division. Born in Portland, he was graduated from Beaverton High School in 1966 and attended a year at Melo Junior college in Menlo Park CA and a year at the University of Oregon before joining the Army last 14 Aug (1968). Survivors besides his parents include a brother, Chris, 18, Stanford University; sister, Dana, San Francisco, and grandfather, Otto Settergren, Portland. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Valley Community Church. Interment will be at Sunset Hills Memorial Park when the body arrives from Vietnam. Portland Navyman Killed in Crash of Helicopter
    Gary Norman Young, 20, a Portland Navy medic serving in Vietnam with the First Marine Regiment, was killed in action last Friday near An Hoa, according to news received by his family in Portland.
    The medic was on an emergency mission to a scene of action seven miles northwest of An Hoa in Kwang nan Province when the helicopter in which he was riding encountered intense small arms and automatic fire and crashed, killing Young.
    Young, the son of Weldon E. Young, 2939 SE Hawthorne Blvd, and stepson of Delbert Newton, 4727 SW Flower Court, was born in Portland and was graduated from Wilson High School. He entered the Navy and received training as a medic after which he was assigned to the First Marines.
    Besides his father and stepfather he is survived by brothers, Steven D. Young, a private in the Army, and Ronald Newton, Portland, and his grandmothers, Mrs. Donnie G. Young, Portland and Mrs. Jewel Evans, Oregon City.
    Funeral arrangements in charge of J. P. Finley & son have not been announced pending arrival of the body from Vietnam. (The Oregonian, Portland OR, Wednesday 12 Feb 1969)

Gladstone GI Killed in War Spec. 4 Jackie Schultz, son of Mrs. Geneva L. Schultz of Gladstone, was killed in action 8 Feb (1969). Mrs. Schultz was notified Wednesday. Schultz was first reported missing in action in Vietnam. His body was later recovered and identified. He attended Washington High School, but graduated from the Redlands CA High School. He enlisted in February 1968, took basic training at Ft. Lewis WA, then paratrooper training at Ft. Benning GA. He went to Vietnam in June, 1968. Gabriel Killed In War Action
      Army Pfc. Joel L. Gabriel, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis E. Gabriel, Rt 5, Box 394, Oregon City, has been killed in South Vietnam as a result of hostile action.
      His parents were notified of the 1966 Oregon City High School graduate's death Thursday by the Department of the Army.
      Gabriel has been stationed in Vietnam seven weeks. He was assigned with the Seventh Cavalry Airmobile Division. He had enlisted into the Army November, 1967. He had attended Western Business College at Portland.
      Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters, Freda Arnold, of Portland and Lula Johnson, of Yamhill. Also grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Dickenson of Portland and Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Talbott, of Illwaco WA.
      Funeral arrangements are pending. His death brings the total Oregon Servicemen killed in Vietnam to 423. (Enterprise Courier, Oregon City OR, 14 Feb 1969)

Rites Pending for Soldier; Mine Victim
    Funeral services are pending for a 20-year-old Eugene soldier who died last Thursday of wounds received when he stepped on a land mine in Vietnam. Dead is Spec. 4 Norman A. Jensen, of Route 6, Eugene.
    Jensen was born in Coquille, 7 Feb 1949. He had lived in the Eugene area for the past 10 years graduating from Churchill High School. He joined the Army on 28 May 1968.
    Survivors include his mother, Lillian Jensen of Crow Road, Eugene; his father, Otis Jensen of Coos Bay; a brother, Larry of Eugene; a sister, Dorothy Marana of Coos Bay; his grandmother, Mrs. S. M. Fries of Junction City, an uncle and an aunt.

Two Spokane Men Killed in Vietnam
    Parents of two Spokane men were notified Thursday their sons were killed in Vietnam this week.
    Dead are Army Staff Sgt. Marvin H. Brown, 38, son of Carl Brown, #2514 Boone, and Marine Pfc. Michael B. Duffy, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard T. Duffy, E3132 Eighteenth.
    Brown died Sunday from wounds received in a battle with the Viet Cong near the Cambodian border. He was serving his third voluntary tour in the war zone.

Pfc. Jim Dickson Killed in Viet Nam
      A former Baker County young man, Jim Lee Dickson, son of Mrs. Vern Dickson, Ontario, became the county's fourth fatality of the Viet Nam conflict 26 Feb (1969). Dickson, age 19, died during a combat operation in Vietnam.
      Dickson was born 3 Jun 1949 in Ontario and attended schools and was graduated from Burnt River High in Unity. At Burnt River he was active in football, baseball and basketball.
      He enlisted in the Army, 10 Jun 1968 and was a private first class in Company A, 3rd Battalion, 506 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division.
      Services for Pfc. Dickson were held Saturday in Ontario with interment at Evergreen cemetery with military honors by Headquarters and Headquarters Co., Desert Test Center, Dug way UT.
      He is survived by his mother; maternal grandfather, Charles Nehrt, Nashville IL; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Dickson, Nyssa; one sister, Mrs. Ella Rae Wilon of Boise. His father, Paul J. Dickon (sic) died in 1966. (The Record - Courier, Baker OR )

'Copter Pilot Dies in War a 20-year-old U.S. Army helicopter pilot from Springfield has become the 48th Emerald Empire man to die of wounds suffered in the Vietnam War.
    Dead is Terry Lee Crawford, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Crawford, 275 South 38th St. He was killed Thursday.
    Crawford died when a booby trap exploded in a cache of confiscated weapons he was unloading, according to his mother.
    He was born on 3 May 1948, at Hood River, and attended Springfield public schools, graduating in 1966 from Thurston High School in Springfield.
    He was employed by Kimwood Service at Cottage Grove prior to enlisting in the Army in November of 1967.
    Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Buell Chapel of Springfield. (Eugene Register-Guard, Eugene OR, 2 Mar 1969)
