Eugene Soldier Becomes Area's 51st War Casualty
Pfc. Melvin Lynn Applebury, a 20-year-old Eugenean originally reported missing in action in Vietnam, has been killed in combat, his parents learned Thursday.
Applebury is the 51st Emerald Empire casualty of the war, the fifth this year.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Applebury, 365 Greenfield Ave., said they were notified their son died in action on 3 Mar (1969).
Born in Salem, Applebury lived in Florence before the family moved to Eugene about five years ago. He was a 1966 graduate of North Eugene High School.
Applebury entered the Army in February, 1968, and went to Vietnam last September. He was with the 4th Infantry Division.
Funeral services are pending at the Buell Chapel, Springfield.

In Remembrance of his friend by Donald L. Butts  STSCS/SS  USN Ret.

I was digging around and finally found out what happened to my friend Melvin Lynn Applebury and I have a photo of him from our school annual. I hope it will be useful. On the Virtual Wall if you look at the Memorial site for a Dennis Coll you will find what happened because Melvin Lynn Applebury is in the list of 21 men who lost their lives in one operation. Thank You for what your doing for our dear friends.
