Marine, Soldier Die VIET FIGHTING CLAIMS TWO MORE LIVES A Marine from Fall Creek and an Army captain who formerly lived in Eugene are among the latest victims of the Vietnam war. Marine Lance Cpl. Authran Wayne Winfrey of Fall Creek became the Emerald Empire's 57th war fatality when he was killed by small arms fire 15 May (1969)
News of Winfrey's death was announced Tuesday by the Defense Department. He was shot while on a company-size search and clear mission three miles west of An Hoa, a combat base in Quang Nam province. Funeral arrangements are pending at Buell chapel in Springfield until the young Marine's body is returned to the United States. Winfrey, 20, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Winfrey of Fall Creek. His father is a hook tender for the Surcamp Logging Co., while his mother is a teacher's aide at Lowell High School. Winfrey was born in Eugene and grew up at Fall Creek. He graduated from Lowell High school in 1964 and attended Lane Community College for almost two years. His three sisters live at home. They are Kathryn, 21, an office employe at Oliver Logging Co.; Carolyn, 18, a first year student at Lane Community College, and Roslyn, 16, a sophomore at Lowell High School. Winfrey's grandparents also live at Fall Creek. They are Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Winfrey and Mrs. Forrest (Vivian) Staley. A memorial fund is being established at Lowell High School and contributions may be made either to the high school office or through the funeral chapel, according to Winfrey's father. The money is to be used to purchase a sign board to be erected in front of the high school. The sign would be used to advertise current school events.

Life Magazine vol. 22, No. 25, June 27, 1969 plus the Life logo was placed above the article's title, Vietnam ONE WEEK'S DEAD, because, I suspect, the Life publishers knew they were making a statement. In a brief introduction the publishers said that they took the 242 names, released by the Pentagon for the week of May 28 thro June 3 because it included Memorial Day. They contacted the families of these men and received pictures for all but 25. They also received "letters home" which the staff writer used in a brief, heart wrenching one page commentary. The article's goal as stated in the introduction...
"More than we must know how many, we must know who. The faces of one weeks' dead, unknown but to families and friends, are suddenly recognized by all in this gallery of young American eyes."
The article has been given credit for 'outing' the war ... But the article didn't tell a complete story because The men featured in the article were all "Hostile Killed". The "Non-Hostile" deaths were NOT included and nor were all the hostile died reported. Researcher comments (much edited)
