Youth Dies in Vietnam A 21-year-old Dorena man, Ronald L. Doolittle, has been killed in Vietnam. Spec. 4 Doolittle was riding in a military vehicle on a military mission and was thrown out when it slid down a steep embankment, military officials said. Mr. Doolittle served for seven months in Vietnam in the artillery. He had been in the Army for one year. He was killed 9 May (1971). He was a 1969 graduate of Cottage Grove High School and worked at Bohemia Lumber Co. at Culp Creek. Mr. Doolittle is survived by his wife, Susan of Saginaw. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Victor Doolittle of Dorena. He had one sister in Portland, Patsy, and one in Dorena, Kathy. In addition, he is survived by four brothers, Ray, Gary, Allen and Lester. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today, (Thursday) at Mills Mortuary. Interment will be in Fir Grove Cemetery. Mr. Doolittle will received full military honors. Sheldon graduate killed by mine in South Vietnam Funeral arrangements are pending for Spec. 4 Thomas H. Farmer, a 1969 graduate of Sheldon High School killed in Vietnam 8 June (1971). Farmer, son of Mrs. Joe A. Blackmon, of 541 Pheasant Blvd., Eugene, was killed when a military vehicle in which he was riding struck a landmine during combat operations near the Laos border. He was 20 years old. He was drafted into the Army in May of 1970 and had served seven months in Vietnam at the time of his death. He was home for a ten-day leave last month and returned to Vietnam 28 May (1971) to complete his last four months of overseas duty. Farmer was born in Atlanta GA, 12 Aug 1950, and in 1959 moved with his family to Springfield, where he attended elementary school and junior high. After graduation from Sheldon, he worked for Camac Veneer, Inc., in Eugene for a year. He married Roberta Stoneberg on 13 Sep 1969 in Reno NV. Survivors include his wife; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Blackmon; his father, Hoyt Farmer of Conyers GA; a brother, Douglas, stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton CA; and a sister, Rebecca Jo, at home. Wayne Steven Murphy Services are pending at W. T. Rigdon mortuary, Salem, for Army Pfc. Wayne Steven Murphy, 20, who was killed by enemy shell action in South Vietnam, on 25 Jun (1971). A native of Dallas, Murphy grew up here and graduated from Dallas high school in 1969. He entered the U.S. Army in April of 1970 and was shipped overseas in September. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emerson V. Murphy, Salem; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Buck and Mrs. Edith Murphy, all of Salem; a brother, Kerry, in the U.S. Marine Corps and a sister, Marilyn Murphy, Salem. (Polk County Itemizer-Observer, Dallas OR, 8 Jul 1971)
